My children and I camped in a pop up for 5 years, then 3 years ago I bought a small motor home. Well I'm returning to the pop up life. Between the maintenance, insurance, and registration, and not being able to leave the campground once hooked up i'ts a hastle and expensive. I'm looking at colemans just because that is what we always had and is most familiar. Hope to see some fellow Pop Up Timers.  :-()  :-()

Welcome Diane!
This is a great group of people who have always seemed ready to help with advice whenever asked!
I almost went from a pop-up to a motorhome then changed my mind. Now I'm debating whether to go for another pop-up or move to a hybrid. With gas prices climbing, another pop-up is winning!
Good luck in your search!

Yeah, I always felt sorry for the poor people with the MH's when they needed to go into town for one reason or another. On several occassions that I had the site along side one of them and they left for town, the campsite vultures would attack their site, thinking they had left for good. They would take wheel chocks, lawn chairs, water hoses, leveler blocks, etc.  We would go over to the site and gather up the remains left behind by the vultures, and give them to the camper once they returned. At least having a detachable camper, the vultures realize that you really haven't left the site.

  Welcome back.

well i posted our pop up in the classifieds a couple of days ago.  we were thinking we might go for a hybrid.  after reading this thread and the thread about gas prices, i'm wondering if i shouldn't stay with the pop up.

we have always enjoyed pop ups........we like camping but like it 'off the ground' but yet close to the outside.

anyone have any opinions about staying or trading?

My wife and I were also planning to go to a hybrid next year, but like everyone else said, gas prices maybe the deciding factor in this decision. I love the popup, but the wife likes the creature comforts. And welcome back to popup camping, Diane. :D

Here's my opinion: Do a little math and see if that changes your mind. For instance:

300 mile (round) trip:

At 15mpg, you will burn 20 gallons of gas. If gas prices go up 0.50 per gallon (a lot), you will spend an extra 10 dollars.

At 12mpg, you will burn 25 gallons of gas. If gas prices go up 0.50 per gallon (a lot), you will spend an extra 12.50 dollars.

If 2.50 makes you not want a hybrid, then maybe you shouldn't get a hybrid.

(Or, an even more extreme example: On a 300 mile round trip, and you get 8mpg, you will burn 37.5 gallons of gas. If gas prices go up 0.50 per gallon, you will spend an extra 18.75 dollars on gas, which is still only 8.75 more than the 15mpg you get pulling a popup, (which is a guess on my part).
