i need to become someone's heir. anybody need a long-lost nephew to leave large sums of cash to?
been shopping here in the dc area for a decent popup with a 10-ft box and roof-air capable, but found nothing worthwile. seems like the interest is way up and driven the pricese  up with it. can't find anything under $3,000 the canvass isn't falling off, or the roof isn't falling in. thought i had a hot buy in a 92 coleman yosemite for $2,600, but when i showed up with dw and the family today, the thing had been hit on the port side, and the water damage to the roof said don't buy me. what i have is fine-77 jayco we renovated last year, but mama wants air, and daddy ain't got the cash cus mama done spent it all.

Have you considered retro-fitting a 8.5 K window unit into the back wall of your PU?.

The price for a window unit will be less than  $ 100 bucks, and a couple pieces of angle iron for supports, some sealer, and your done. It looks like it could be installed in a couple of hours... once you get over the fear of cutting the hole in the back wall of your PU.

My used  78' Palomino had one when I  bought it, and although it was not as efficient as a roof mount A/C unit, it cooled the PU enough to be comfortable. Add a couple of occillating fans to get the cooled air up into the bunk areas, all the better.

This might do in the pinch... instead of purchasing another PU.

PS: I gave this camper to my daughter and SIL when I purchased my 2001 Coleman Mesa, and the A/C still works for them. I can e-mail you some pics. of that installation if you like to get the idea of what it will look like.

ehehehehe...try selling one....I've got our '73 Starcraft for sale...lots of bites, but nothing solid yet....people wanting to make payments for thenext couple months, people wanting to pay a lot less than it's worth, and so on...I like a good deal too, but come on...

Plenty of time before it gets warm though!!!

Good luck!!!

kickinkz,

That's the reason why I decided to give my daughter and SIL my '78 Palomino when I bought my 2001 Coleman Mesa. I needed the room in the garage for my new addition. The Palomino was fully equipped (A/C, Furnace, fridge, Carefree awning, wired for cable TV, and I completly restored with new canvas and interior fabric, etc)

The dealer's would give me next to nothing for the trade-in value, and if I sold it on my own, I would be lucky to get $ 400.00 for it. It just didn't seem like it was worth the trouble. Giving it to my daughter and SIL, I still get to see it when we go out camping together.

It won't work!  There is a very good reason why RV A/Cs output rating starts at about 13,500 BTUs.  You need that kind of output to feel any sort of difference in a non-insulated tent-covered box.

While an 8500 BTU A/C might do a fine job for a small bedroom in a house, it won't even begin to cool down a PU in 100 degree weather, with 90% humidity.  It will feel like it's blowing hot air!  The only cold air will be within 10 inches of the A/C vent.

As for buying a used PU, have you looked here:  RV Trader Online

Beacher,

I beg to differ with you.

I can say first hand that it did for the ten years that I owned the Palomino, and still does to this day cool the inside of the PU by at least 20 degrees. Twenty degrees cooler in any weather will feel cooler.

Water poured out of the back of the unit to the extent that it would fill a tupperware 2 gallon container everyday. This became the dogs water bowl.

As I mentioned, it is not as efficient as the 15K Coleman I now have on the roof, but it did make the old Palomino comfortable down here during the hot and humid Georgia summers.

But for $100.00, it can and will do a respectable job. Heck, if it hits 100 degrees, my 15K will have a problem keeping up also.

May I ask if you ever owned a PU will a window unit installed, or are you going by word of mouth?
