Ok, I know I've probably seen threads about this before, but never really paid attention since I wasn't planning to be in this situation for a few years.  However, I'm facing it now rather than later.  We are trading in the Palomino on a nearly new pu.  (discovered the Pal had some major problems).  In a nutshell, the dealer called us today to let us know the final amount including taxes. Included in this amount was "a fee they routinely charge." The salesman stated that he didn't even think to mention it since it's an automatic fee they charge everyone. It's not a dealbreaker; but we are not happy with this being sprung on us at the last minute. We feel it should have been mentioned when we were there. Any feedback here? Is this a normal fee? Reasonable amount? We are scheduled to pick up the new pop-up tomorrow afternoon. Oh yeah....if any TPUC members have read this; please shhhh. It's a secret and you people get to see it next week. So, what should we counter with (if anything) regarding the added charge?

I have purchased one new popups, one used popup and one hybrid at three different dealers.  I never paid an additional fee.

Only extra fee I have had to pay is for temeprary plates or state title.

It is a common practice when buying a car.  Generally called an administrative fee.  All it really is is extra dealer profit.  It is supposed to be for doing the paperwork.

On some cars that I have bought, I have negjotiated that I not pay that fee.

Jan I would tell them forget it.  If they didn't tell you about it ahead of time I would think it is a BS fee.  I paid for my PU, the taxes, title and tag and that was it.

So what are you getting?????????

I had to pay a "prep" fee to the dealer.  I was told about it up front and didn't have a problem.  What they say it is, is a fee for them to go through the entire camper and look for any defects.  They check for any leaks, test all the appliances, lights, gas, electric brakes etc.  They do it for new and used, but on the used it is already figured into the price.  But they still tell you about it.  Most salesmen are crooked in my mind anyway, but to tell you this at the loan signing is a crock of poo.  Get up an leave, I bet they  decide to waive the fee for you.

That's crap!  They have to do that anyway. What if they sold an unsafe unit to someone and the stove blew up cause they didn't do a walk thru.  The lawsuits would be flyin. I bought mine new and a walk thru was included.  They showed me how everything worked, stove, refer, a/c, water.  I would have told them to pound salt if they wanted to charge me more money to show me how use and check the safety of a unit I just spent 1,000's of  $$'s on.

Great, well then he shouldn't mention it.
His mistake for not mentioning it, so no he doesn't get any more money.
You had an agreed upon price, he is now trying to up his profit. His fee should have been included in the quoted price.
