I have some frozen rolls that I thought I might be able to thaw, rise and press into greased pie irons and put butter, cinnamon and sugar in there to make cinnamon rolls over the fire.  Has anyone done this and did it work good?  Thanks!

I haven't done it, but it sure sounds good.:)

Last week my wife and I did a cooking demo for some Cub Scouts. We used a pie iron for one of our demos. Just a simple 2 pieces of bread and some strawberry jam and topped with powdered sugar. Disappeared lickety-split. Also showed them how to cook an egg in a waxed paper cup and other fun things.

OK, I'll bite.  How do you cook an egg in a wax paper cup?  Any other boy scout cooking tips?  I have to agree with you, those cinnamon rolls sure do sound good.  What exactly is a pie iron?

Pattycakes,
Cooking an egg in a waxed paper cup is an old trick. Put your egg (still in the shell) in the waxed paper cup. Fill almost to the top with water. Put charcoal around it and shortly the water will boil. The water keeps the cup from burning and in a few minutes you can have a soft boiled egg, or keep going and you'll have egg salad for lunch.

You can also cook hamburger in an cleaned out orange and half an onion that is down to a couple of layers. You can also cook cornbread in the orange or cook an egg in the half an onion. There are other fun things also. I'm going to have to try the cinnamon rolls in the pie iron though. It sounds yummy.

We haven't tried the cinnamon rolls yet, but we always use the tube biscuits and croissant dough in our pie irons.

We use the biscuit rolls for breakfast sandwiches. I scramble a small batch of eggs, then put a small amount in between two biscuits with cheese and either bacon or sliced ham (my favorite is eggs, pepper jack cheese, bacon and some left over peppers and onions). They cook to puffed perfection. This is my kid's favorite camping meal.

With the croissant dough, you can make great sweet dessert or snack pies. I take canned apples (or, if I'm feeling energetic, I cook down fresh apples with cinnamon and sugar), or sometimes we use canned cherries. In August we always get lucky and find wild blueberries, raspberries and blackberries. Jam or preserves also work ok. Spread on croissant roll on each side of the pie iron and fill. They make great desserts. The dough is sweet and puffs beautifully.

The dough is definitely preferred by my family over bread. Always use cooking spray to keep them from sticking.

I guess I'll be trying the cinnamon rolls next!  :)

Pattycakes- Dave used to sell the pie irons in the PUT store. I bought 4 from him. They are Rome Industries cast iron and they are excellent!

Here's a link to stores that carry Rome Industries Cast Iron pie irons:
