If you are referring to Navajo Lake State Park in North West New Mexico, there is excellent camping right there in the State Park that is very reasonable. If you are looking for a private campground, I think that there is a KOA in Bloomfield or Farmington.

Now if you are not afraid to camp by yourselves, that area is home to the Bureau of Land Management Lands. Camping is free. Camping is driving down a dirt road and finding a level spot to set up your pop up and making your own camp site. If this is your desire, you need to think about carrying in all the water that you think you will need.  And, by the way, if you find water out there, you need to camp, at least 150ft back from water source to prevent contaimination.

That part of the world offers viewing of some of the most intense geologic images found in the U.S. as well as multiple ruins from the ancient indians that occupied this area between 900 and 1200 AD.

If you like fly fishing for trout, you will find Gold Medal Waters and probably one of the best fly fishing spots in the U.S. below the Navajo Lake Dam on the San Juan River. Fly fishing on barbless hooks and catch and release only. Average size of a trout is 17 inches. My wife and I have fished this many times, and have never been disappointed.

You will find the area a very enriching experience and there is much to see and do. If you want to go further into the mountains, head East towards Chama, NM and there is also excellent camping there as well within the National Forests or the little town of Chama itself.

We will be out there in September after labor day for our annual trip.
