Hi friends!

The DW has talked me into taking her to the SC lowcountry in July (in spite of the heat!)

We've been checking out Hunting Island SP, Edisto Beach SP, and the Point South KOA in Yemassee. Availability at the state parks is limited; the best I've been able to find is a three-night availability at Hunting Island. The KOA has a nice deal: 4 nights for the price of 3.

The DW wants to explore the African-American heritage stuff in and around the coastal islands.

What campgrounds do you folks recommend from personal experience?

Thanks!

As opposed to our first trip to Hunting Island (when the campground was nearly deserted) this last trip it was at least 80% full.

The park has over a hundred sites divided up into individual loops with a bathhouse for each.  The bathhouse was clean with plenty of hot water, but I noted that there was no heat or air conditioning, just open screen windows.  In  hot or cold weather some may find them uncomfortable.

The weather was beautiful!  We were able to swim a few times and met family and friends who were renting one of the cabins on the beach.

The entire campground now allows reservations, sot this may explain limited sites.  Most sites are wide with sufficient under-story to shield you from your neighbors.  Care should be taken in that several sites marked as pull through are only suitable for tents as obstructions would not allow a vehicle to pull into the site.  During slow periods the staff closes off unused loops to allow closing of unneeded bath houses.

We did find that during warmer weather the bugs do come out.  Remember your bug sprays.  Additionally, if you camp with a dog check them regularly for ticks, they were out in force.

Patrols by ranges were plentiful.  We saw them driving around almost  the park 24 hours a day.

This is still one of the nicest parks we have visited.  We enjoyed this park and plan to return again.

We've camped at Hunting Island numerous times. It is great, but buggy.  The park really lets you know what the low-country was like before all us tourists started coming.  If you do go to Hunting Island, eat at the Shrimp Shack.  It's located about a mile before the state park entrance.  We've gone to Hunting Island just to eat there.  Also Beaufort is full of history and is a neat town to tour.
