What is your favorite Southeastern United States high altitude (above 3,000') campground (federal, state, or private), what are its features, etc.?

For example, is your favorite Mount Pisgah (dry) Campground across the Blue Ridge Parkway from the Pisgah Inn near Asheville, NC? Is it Black Rock Mountain State Park campground (with water, AC, cable TV) near Clayton, GA?

Balsam Mountain Campground in the Smokies. It's over 5,000 ft and is really cool....figuratively and literally

Thanks for the reply!  I'll search for Balsam Mountain Campground on the 'net.  We live in far south Georgia, 18 miles north of Florida, and July and August are -H-O-T-.  We like to take a break from the heat in July and August and "head for the mountains" as they say in the Busch beer TV ads.  We "pay" in July-August for the nice December weather.  We basically have winter in January-February only.

I agree, Balsam Mountain (dry camping) is a nice spot. It's in the GSMNP and close to Cherokee. (If your into the tourist stuff).  Pretty nice bathrooms with flush toilets but no showers.

Just down the road from Balsam is Mile High Campground. (you actually pass Mile High on your way to Balsam).  Mile high is on the Indian reservation and is dry camping as well. They have a fairly primitive bathhouse with a shower. The sites at Mile High have some incredible views.

Both are just off the Blue Ridge Parkway. Expect nice cool nights even in the middle of summer. Gets pretty busy up there this time of year.

As a boondocker, neither is really my style of camping but pretty nice as campgrounds go.

Jimbob: Thank you for another good suggestion!  Scott

See our review of Grayson Highlands SP - hard one to beat.  (By the way, we just spent 9 nights there and the temp was in the lo to high 60's.
