can anyone tell me about camping in high winds. how much wind can a pu take? i was in sustained 35 mph winds in the blackrock desert and thought that the rig might come apart.

If it's any comfort to you, I have been in wind as high as 50 + MPH, and the PU did much better that the tree limps surrounding my campsite. The awning was tied down to a very heavy picnic table, so it didn't even move.

Hoppette and I were out on our boat about 15 miles from our campsite, when we noticed some pretty awful looking clouds coming up behind us. We hauled A$$ back down the lake to our camp sight with the storm at our heels. By the time I was able to beach the boat and tie it up, the heavens opened up with some very heavy rain, and the wind was tremendous.

By the time we got into the PU, it got really bad. There was heavy wind, thunder and lightining,  and rain for close to an hour. The walls of the PU were flapping so hard, I had to open the windows at the top a little on both sides to allow the wind to pass through the PU.

Turns out, a tornado touched down about 12 miles further up the lake. We sure were luckly that time.

Since then, we have been in some milder 35 - 40 MPH winds though.

We have been in 50 + winds several times.  The PU did fine.:)

Ditto to that. We were camped on a lake when high winds hit us broadside during a storm, with lightning and hail to boot. Coming straight across the lake there was nothing to slow the wind down. We also had our awning up and were not able to roll it up, so we staked it heavily to the ground and were lucky that it was on the leeward side of the camper. I fear that if it had been on the windward side it would have flip over the camper. Sure wished it rolled up like the big rv's awnings do.
Now if there is a chance of storms during the weekend, we take our small step ladder so we can put up the awning in an emergency. Can't afford to replace it, that's for sure!
