DW and I have to attend a wedding in Connecticut and were looking at different hotels.

We picked up a Traveler Discount Guide at a Welcome Center.  Most Welcome Centers on the interstates have these books.

I compared the rates in the Discount Guide with the rates on two discount internet sites.

I found that the Traveler Discount Guide had much better rates.  I compared 4 hotels and the difference was about $20.

Of course the rates are subject to availability and only on certain days of the week.  Like Sunday through Thursday.

The rates in the Discount Guide were even better than AAA or AARP.

We used a discount coupon on our trip last year for a hotel on our last night.  Clerk looked up AAA, AARP and the discount coupon was the best.

Always try and make a pit-stop at those state welcome centers and pick-up one of those travel guides, too. Never know when you might have to take shelter (besides the camper) for the night! One time there was a cupon for a resturant that offered buy one meal and get another equal at no charge which turned out to be not only a good meal but reasonable as well, considering. Also, occasionally there can be campground discount cupons, too. Got one for the Kentucky Horse Camp which was just off I-75, a tad north of Lexington. What a great C/G! They cater to the horse crowd but anyone can camp there. I got a beautiful site on the outer loop right next to the white fence where there are horses to watch; that night we grilled a steak and sat at the picnic table watching thoroughbreds romping about. Just finding out about this place was worth the stop at the state welcome/information center.

We have used those several times as well, especially when going to Asheville to visit the Biltmore.

If nothing else, those coupon books give GREAT directions to the available places, even if you don't use their coupons!

I usually stop at welcome centers and pick up this kind of info, too, although I have yet to use a hotel coupon.  One perk of working in a hotel is an employee discount.  (that's about the ONLY perk).  For instance, we visited the Biltmore Estate in December when I got a free room.  Not bad, eh?  And, honestly, I spend so much time in a hotel, that I would rather camp!

I thought I was the only one who used those cupons.  :p
