I have a question for those of you who have been to William Heise cg.
Can you have a tent with you at a hook up site? and or can you put a tent on a hook up site? We are trying to plan an after xmas trip with our tent camping friends.
Thanks guys

We were there several years ago (the season before the Cedar fire) and I don't believe there were hook-up sites at that time.  There were tents around, but I don't remember if there were any on the same site as an RV.  But since county park camping is one of hte best bargains around,w hy don't you just get two sites side by side so you don't have to worry about it?  Be sure to check the weather -- Julian at Christmas can mean snow!  I've been there in the week betwen Christmas and New Years and we had cold rain and ice on the road.

I have seen tents in the hook up area but I think they really frown on it.  You might give them a call and ask.  During "off season" they are a little more relaxed with the rules.  We go every thanksgiving and IT'S REALLY COLD AT NIGHT.  During the day it's a toss up.  My son was there just yesterday and said it was freezing cold.

Thanks I figured it would be cold we were at San Mateo when it was 30 at night a few years ago so the cold is not to big a factor, I just did not want to reserve a hookup spot for our friends in a tent than get there and have it not be allowed. We want hook ups so we can run a space heater and not go thru propane like mad for heat.

I drove through last Saturday to take a look and it was rather chilly.  I asked quite a few questions since I had just been looking at the reservation site and noticed that one of the SD parks- Lake Jennings- had listed some sites as TENTS ONLY.  The ranger confirmed- Tents Only means just that, no popups or other RV's.  The other sites- including the hookup sites- are available for tents or RV's.

The electric sites at Heise weren't nearly as nice as most of the non-hookup sites.  Some were very small or steep with no good place to put a tent (except the driveway).  For tent camping though it would be nice to have electric so you could use a portable electric heater.  I camped with a friend's family at Dos Picos last winter and they kept their dome tent nice and warm.

Given the choice- I like Dos Picos better.

Dos Picos is a very nice park also....HOWEVER, if you don't mind the roudys.  Sometimes the campers are of the younger crowd who party hardy.  AND  they have REALLY BIG FLYING/HISSING BEETLES.   3-4 inches....no kidding, I have pictures.  We still go often but off season.  Winter camping...ha ha here in san diego......shouldn't be a big deal at Dos Picos.  Maybe the bugs will be sleeping too.  Santee Lakes is nice too.  If you can get a lake front their the best but they are really working hard with the rest of their camp ground.  You might check it out......no bugs...ha ha

Thanks so much you guys. After all of this it appears our friends can not go with after all, with the kids schedules off school they both can not take the same week off of work. So we may be alone if they do not have a majic soultion, we also decided to head up to lake cachuma instead and see the grandparents on the way. So all is not lost. We will check out the suggested campgrounds sometime this year I am sure as we have averaged once a month this year, and new adventures are always fun.
