Was wondering if anyone had favorite sites to suggest for Rollins Pond or Fish Creek Campgrounds? After years of TRYING to get there, I think we're going to make another attempt for Memorial weekend 2006!
Thanks!

Is that in Maine or New York?

We have been holding a Boyscout Family weekend at Fishcreek pond on Labor Day Weekend for two years now.  This place is a slice of heaven.  All sites are on the water so you can just slip out of you pop up and dive into the lake.  There just isn't a bad site on the campground.  That said, I am partial to the last 100 sites ( 200 thru 300) There seems to be less congestion than at the entrance to the campground.  There is an entrance thru the back, but it is only open till 8:00 PM.  Don't wait one more year, you will not regret it.  :D

Hey Gary- we were on site 99 on Fish Creek this past August- nice grassy site, close to water . There is a small concrete wall at this point on Fish Creek that we needed to hoist the kayaks up and down, but nothing significant- maybe 18" at the most. There's also a toilet house across the road from this site.

We rode our bikes around the Rollins Pond area and marked down these sites, based on closeness of the water for the kayaks and closeness of a water spigot-

226, 227, 240, 241, 35, 9

Rollins Pond seems a lot quieter, probably because they limit motors to 25 horse on Rollins. Someone that camps there a lot told us that Rollins Pond- especially up in the 200's gets really dark at night. I believe it- you are really back there in God's country! I can't wait to stay at Rollins next year!

Fish Creek seems a bit busier, probably because the road goes all the way around Fish Creek and Square Pond. There's always a bit of traffic on the road in those areas.

We'll be heading back up next summer. We really liked these campgrounds!

Great.  Four posts by people "in the know" and not one bothered to mention the state.

Sorry AustinBostin,
I was hit with a computer virus a while back and I'm still trying to get caught up with lost work! Rollins Pond and Fish Creek are in the Adirondacks in New York.

Thanks for the info Kathybrj and Felix. Keeping in mind we are kayakers, (but don't mind boats, kind of like playing in the wakes), which campground would you prefer to stay at?

kathybrj

We don't care for the power boats so Rollins Pond is where we'd prefer to stay. Fish Creek Pond tends to get choppy and the sites between about 90- 150 get a good stiff breeze a lot of the time.

While you're there, check out the kayaking up the creek access that the road bridge goes over. There's a small launch over by the bridge and anything with a motor has ony 1,000 feet they can go up the creek before they have to stop.

We kayaked over 3 hours back there and kept finding more waterways into more ponds. From the looks of the map they gave us upon check in, you can eventually get into upper Rollins Pond from back there. Unfortunately, there is no waterway connection between Rollins Pond and Square Pond (main water area of Fish Creek).

Here are links to Rollins Pond and Fish Creek Pond, both to the west of the town of Saranac Lake, in the northern part of Adirondack Park in New York.

Gary- make sure you keep the map they give you at check in- it shows where the water spigots are- handy for making reservations next time around!. Reserve America didn't have them on their maps. It also has good maps for the ponds to kayak and the carry trails.

And if you head out to the Trading Post store, say hi to the owner Phil. He's a dear old friend of ours. :)

Thanks!
I have reservations for site #9 at Rollins Pond for Memorial Weekend! THIS time we're going to make it come heck or high water!, Well, maybe not high water, but....

Looks like our camping season is over. Still hiking and paddling left though!

kathybrj

The camper is winterized here- we took the tv off the road until May and bought a smaller car for winter transportation and better gas mileage.

We're still doing day trips and can get the kayaks around. And we are looking toward next season- trip to Letchworth that will double as a visit to SUNY Geneseo for our son is one. I'd like to get to Rollins Pond for a full week also.

Let us know how you like it!

I've camped at Rollins Pond (and adjoining Fish Creek) quite a bit. I've recently been working on adding a photo album to my website which has a photo of each one of the sites at Rollins. This way you can see what a site looks like before you reserve it. It's not all done yet, but you can see the pictures at this url:

Just click on the picture of the campsite, and more will show up.

Hope this helps.

We stayed in site 4 the last two Labor Days. Right on the water & close to the boat livery. This year we did a canoe & kayak loop through Rollins, Floodwood, Little Square, Copperas, carried to Whey Pond & back to our site.

I like Rollins over Fish Creek, the sites are wider apart & are separated with trees & bushes. If you bring a canoe or kayak like we do, there's plenty of water to paddle & it's a short drive to the St. Regis Canoe Area for even more water! If you're not into paddling there's the hike up St. Regis Mountain, the trailhead is on Keese Mill Rd IIRR. It's about a 7 mile RT hike, there's an old fire tower on St. Regis Mt but you can't climb it. Before we got the PU, DW & I would canoe-camp in the SRCA. You can paddle Long Pond then hike to Mountain Pond. From there there's a trail to Long Pond Mt. that's not shown on too many maps.
