Hello:

Does anyone have any advice for repairing the lift system on a 90 Flagstaff popup.  The main cable is broken at the crank and the back lift bar is stuck about 1/4 of the way up.

Well I tackled the job myself.  I found Goshen Stamping in Indiana that makes and sells replacement parts for my lift system.  I replaced about half of the system with new parts for about $40.00.  I was expecting several hundreds!  I highly recommend them over buying the same parts from a dealer or distributor.  One on-line distributor was putting a 300% markup on the same parts I bought direct.  All I needed was the manufacturer's name and some dimensions of the pop-up and the parts.  Check them out @ //www.goshenstamping.com.

I was curious to know how the cable might have become broken. I think the most cases of broken cables (of ANY brand) I've seen posted here were due to forgetting to first undo the roof latches.

For sure, those Goshen lift folks are great people to do business with. I've e-mailed a couple of questions to them in regard to lift maintenance; they replied once by return e-mail and then called me the last time - could not have been more helpful.

The cable was broken when I got the camper.  It broke near the crank.  It was pretty rusted at the crank.  The main problem I had was that one of the rear lift springs folded over in the lift tube and would not slide back through the tube that runs under the camper.  It was an easy fix once I figured out how the system works, thanks to Goshen.

Thanks for the info ...!

I have the Goshen lift, too, and to date have not had the first problem with it. But I did call them to ask about how often to lube the system, specifically the zerk fittings underneath the camper. Here they told me to use just a minimal amount of grease annually as the tendency was to overgrease and that could  become a dust attraction. Also, another pointer they gave me on the subject of the lifters was that after the camper was closed down and the roof latches were secured, was to reach down (manually, by hand ... not using the crank handle) and turn the cranking socket clockwise maybe two or three clicks, to take the slack out of the cables thus maybe preventing damage to them flopping around as your traveling down the highway.

Those Goshen folks could not have been more helpful!

Thanks for the tip on the cable tension and the reminder to grease the lift system.  I got so greasy replacing the old system that I forgot to grease up the new.
