I'll admit it's cute, but having at least 5 Mayflower ancestors (that I know of), I take a keen interest in the "first thanksgiving" and would like to drop some trivia on it.

First, a day of thanksgiving would have been a day without food.  They would have given thanks by fasting and prayer.  It was really a harvest festival.

Second, just how the Wampanoags ended up there is in doubt.  There is no contemporary evidence that they were invited.  It seems the most likely scenario is that they heard gunfire (the Pilgrims would have celebrated, in part, by firing muskets into the air), and came to see what was going on.

Third, today we would be shocked at what they ate.  The only contemporary source for what they ate lists a wide variety of meat - and nothing else.  Lots of meat.  The Wompanoags may have brought popcorn (along with venison, turkey, and maybe some fish), but everything else we know of was meat.

So don't feel guilty for taking a second helping of turkey (or ham, or venison, or whatever).  They filled their plates with roasted meat (and popcorn).

What, no Pillsbury crescent rolls?  I am shocked!  (And awed.)  Happy holiday, everyone.  I won't be around tomorrow.....
