Where's the windiest place you've ever camped?

Where is the windiest (non storm-related) place you have camped?

We've camped in a lot of places, but without question, the windiest was Farewell Bend State park in Oregon.

We decided to take down our awning.  DD decided to use her little pup tent that night (too much family togetherness ;) ).

We had home-made reflectix bunk ends that were held on with bungie cords and heavy-duty binding clips.

In the night, DD found her tent trying to roll away in the wind, with her in it.  And one of the reflectix bunk ends were torn.

I think our windiest place to camp was Mclain State  Park.  It is in the U.P of Michigan right on Lake Superior.  It made for some pretty big waves.   BTW, this is a wonderful state park with beautiful sunsets.

The KOA in Buffalo Wyoming ~ hands down!  We had a hard time just getting there because of the crosswinds on the highway.  When we pulled in we noticed many awnings shredded and on top of RVs cuz people had left them out when they went out for the day.  Whoops.

Fortunately for us we were camping with my sister and they put us all together in the tent area ~ we had trees and a shelter ~ we we didn't get hit as hard as the big rigs, but it was a chore helping her set up her tent!  And the awning stayed in the bag the whole trip!

Balmorhea State Park, TX.

We camped there last year in March. Planned on staying there 2 nights as we were passing through. The first night not bad, got up toured the park, swam in the pool, then went to bed. About 1:00am the wind came through with a train sound. Babies started crying, tents were collapsing. Our C channels for the support poles would not stay in place and fell to the ground  a few times because the wind was bouncing us around. The scariest part was the it was inflating and deflating the tenting with such force. I thought for sure there was damage done to the camper, but no. We packed up at 3:00am and and headed down the road. Found out the winds were coming through up to 65 mph. Too scary. We will never camp there again.

The windiest place that I ever camped  (in our sailboat) was Stewart Island, off the south coast of the South Island of New Zealand. Spent 2 days with the winds over 100MPH (gusting to 140). There were some campers, in a tent on shore. They spent the entire 2 days huddled inside of a tent that was blown flat, on top of them.

After the storm passed, I went ashore to see if they were OK. They spent the 2 days unable to eat or even move, for fear of being blown away. That morning, they got up before sunrise, went out and shot a deer. There was venison (deer meat) for everyone. Most of it stayed in the freezer on our yacht. The sea plane that was scheduled to come and pick them up was  (understandably) unable to land at the scheduled time. The hunters had to stay for an extra 4 days.

In short, I wouldn't recommend taking your PU down there :p .

The windiest place that we have camped in the US was Pt. Mugu SP. It is right on the beach in one of the windiest points on the West Coast. Pt. Mugu SP is located just South of Pt Mugu which is a point of land that juts out into the channel between Santa Barbara Island and the coast. When a cold front comes through, the wind gets forced down that channel and can often blow 70mph (in gusts). This is evidensed by the large sand dune that is located just across the street from the campgrounds. Most of the time, it is very nice there and our favorite place to camp. You will find us there, at least, once a month.

Our windiest camping yet has been at Trailer Village at the Grand Canyon, May, 2005.

My windward Gizmo held on with metal clips completly blew off.  It launched some of the clips to places unknown and never found.  My hot water heater pilot, (actually alot of RVers), kept blowing out throughout the night.

I worried more about somthing caught by the wind ripping through the tenting, than the PU itself.

Our tour van driver who took my family and I down to the town of Williams to ride the Grand Canyon Railway actually lived full-time in Trailer Villiage.  He said the wind we experienced during our stay was "nothing"!  We should see when they have a sandstorm!

I would have to say that Assateague Island National Sea Shore is the windiest place we have camped.  A friend wanted to turn/spin their PU so that the wind would not blow the door off the camper when someone opened the door.  There were 7 or 8 of us trying to hold onto the open PU so that it didn't blow away (when the wheel chocks were removed).  Some of the people we were with. will not camp at Assateague after that trip.:)

I have to agree, but down the road at the Porcupine Mtn SP - Presque Isle Unit up on the bluffs of Lk Superior. 50 MPH constant winds! Funny thing was you cross the road to the sites off the lakeside and it was as calm as could be. Our makeshift windblock out of a tarp must of looked nuts to them, but it enabled us to have a fire without the fire blowing away.

I don't remember the name of the place, but it was a Provincial Park on the west side of Prince Edward Island...the wind never stopped. It's like the wind just blew right up the St. Lawrence river... We lasted 3 days there, then broke camp and headed for Lilly Bay State Park on Moosehead Lake in Maine...couldn't take anymore of the wind...

Jalama Beach -- beautiful sunset, too windy to enjoy it though!
