I'm trying to teach myself how to play the acoustic guitar. I've always felt that being able to play a guitar around the campfire would be pretty cool and fun thing to do in the early evenings. But now that I think about it, I'm having a hard time thinking about any occasion that I've heard one being played in a state park

If a fellow camper was strumming away in a site close by would you join in or call the ranger  :p  Then again would your answer depend on the quality and type of music being played  :D

I've only had this happen one time ... it was at Forestville State Park and it was on a Sunday morning (late) not an evening.  It only took a few minutes for my kids (and me :D) to be singing along under our breath as we started packing up.   :M

At night ~ I think it would just depend on what kind of music, how loud and what time it was.  Each situation would probably be different.

last year on our annual trip with brother and company, the older couple next to us came in, set their site up, and then we heard ( when brother's kiddos weren't making noise) the most peaceful sound....the old gent had a guitar out and was just strumming away.  After he played a couple of songs that no one recognized and didn't care if we did, we clapped and yelled bravo and more!  We thought it was a very nice gesture for him to share with us, or rather allow us to eavesdrop from the next campsite!  That night he pulled it out again around the campfire, we didn't go over, but again clapped for him (no yelling, above mentioned kiddos were sleeping! LOL)
Makes one want to take up guitar playing, what a nice evening that was!

This brings to mind a totally different situation...

One way to GUARANTEE a private site is to place a large tuba on the picnic table.  If someone starts setting up next to you, be sure to yell "Johnny, you didn't practice yesterday, so today you are going to practice for TWO hours."

I'd camp in the next county.

With me, it would depend on the time of day, and the extensiveness.  During the day or the evening would be fine, unless it goes on for hours and I couldn't get away from it if I wanted to.  It would also have to be acoustic guitar.  I don't think I could handle an electric beast in a campground, even with a practice amp.

We did have an experience in Toronto with some Newfies.  They were members of a traveling band and quite good, earning their living from performing.  They also enjoyed drinking...extensively.  One night, about midnight, we were awoken by a very loud acoustic guitar strum.  This group had decided to have a sing-a-long from the site right across the road from us.  They had some very expensive instruments, and this guitar had enough tone and projection that it sounded like she was sitting at the dinette in our camper.  It really was a gorgeous sounding guitar, and I probably would have enjoyed it, but not at midnight.  I got dressed, walked across the road up to their group (about 6), and told them it was time to put it away.  Words were exchanged as I walked back across the road to our camper.  The guitar playing stopped.  They did meet up with me the next day after they sobered up and apologized, and we didn't have any problems after that.

In the end, I'd say go for it, but do be reasonable.  The fact that you even took the time to post this says to me that you would be.  You should be fine.  Don't worry about your skill level, just keep working at it.  Sore fingers should take care of themselves in a couple weeks, if you keep at it daily.  You will build up callouses on your left hand fingertips.  (Don't worry, nobody will notice them.)  Use nylon strings if you want something a little easier on your fingers.  They would also give you a softer sound that wouldn't carry as far, if you are concerned about campground disturbances.

After listening to the constant drone of motor-scooters, the neighboring motorhome's widescreen TV, the other neighbor's boombox on the picnic table and screaming kids, it would be a pleasure to enjoy a sound as inobtrusive as a little acoustic guitar!

Yea, but keep in mind EARLY for Marcy is noon-ish.  The people were probably cheering cuz they knew checkout time was coming up.   :p

If it was me I would break out the electric guitar ..the amp and play some good 80's hair band music...and right after that .I would be thrown out..and beatin with a big stick :J

seriously acoustic guitars are very mellow nice to listen to but always before quiet hour...unless you camp with DEE  ;)
