I was in Harbor Freight this weekend and came across a new item they have which I think should work great to anchor the pop up awning poles, although it will not be of any use if you camp at a campground with a cement or blacktopped pad. You can check it out at harborfreight.com  It is item number 92448-oceh  the in-ground pole anchor. I bought 2 of them and will be trying them out this next week to see how they work. They look like they should do a good job of anchoring the awning poles without using any guy ropes at all.

Those auger type pole holders look like they would work pretty well in some places with good dirt to auger into.  Cheap enough to give them a try too!  Thanks.

Might not work too well for campsites along waterways where the soils are really cobbly & gravelly though.

I saw those a few months ago:

I think that I would still want to use the guy ropes. You might stand a good chance of bending the poles without them.
