Hi all!

New to the web site.  My wife and I are looking at getting our first Pop Up.  We have been tent camping for a couple years and ready to move up.  I can get a 96 Coleman Yukon with awning and screened in room for $3000.  It's in great shape, only used a couple times a year by the current owners.

I can't find much good info on this model and was wondering a couple things:

1) Is this a good model Pop Up?
2) $3000 seems about right for price from what I've seen in ads.

Also seems the Yukon was a model that lasted just a couple years?

Thanks for any advice!

From what I have read in this and other forums is that there may be an issue with the roof.  Isn't the '96 models the ones with the ABS roofs that sag or crack?  Maybe you should check into the roof issue before you purchase.  I seem to remember reading somewhere that Fleetwood will send the roof for nada, but the shipping is about 1700 bucks......Anybody else know whether this is correct?

Hi Scott - welcome abaord!

I use to have a '96 Coleman (Fleetwood) Yukon - it was the previous popup and my first one.  Had been down sizing, from a 28' TT to a 17' TT, then back to tent camping, than the bug hit me to try a popup. That down sizing continued as I reached retirement age, sold the Yukon and now have a smaller 8' box Starcraft. I was suspecting gas prices would be going through the roof and so I got the smaller one and even thinking I just might have to revert back to a 4-banger as a tow vehicle! Besides, the most the Starcraft ever has to accommodate is two and a lot of the time just me, so it does comfortably for what I want.

The '96 model run for the Coleman/Fleetwood Grand Tour series was the first year (and the Yukon model was part of that series), of the infamous ABS roof and where the first sign of trouble was a sagging roof. Lots of speculation as to why some of them sagged and others did'nt. But mine happened to be one of them that did! So, for openers, take a look down the roof line of that camper when it's closed and see if it has sagged ... you'll see it, trust me! If your the second or third owner there is no warranty and I hear the total cost of having a new roof installed is somewhere between two and three thousand bucks!

The second problem was water leakage in the front storage compartment. Had to replace the weather stripping around the top lid and I think it had stopped it, at least while I owned it. But if this not corrected it will ruin the front flooring, usually at one of the front corners of the compartment. So open the compartment and give the floor a good check out.

Good luck, and let us know how you come out.

Thanks guys!  I'll be taking a look at it next weekend.  I had read about that roof problem and asked the owner about it and she said she never had a problem with it.  However it's been pretty much in storage the past 3 years and was only used twice a year the previous 5 years so that may help it not sag, don't know.  It doesn't have an A/C unit so not sure if that makes the sag worse or not.  But I'll certainly check for sag!  And I'll check the flooring for sure too.

Thanks again!

Oh yea, does the Yukon have electric breaks?

It appears that this camper doesn't have a problem with the roof, it's not sagging or anything.  After 10 years does anyone think that it's beyond the point of the roof problem appearing?  Or could it pop up at any time?

The roof could sag at any time.  I thought I had a good roof and after 4 seasons I had to have my roof replaced.  Did you raise the roof a few inches and then run a line from the front of the roof to the rear of the roof?  If there is more than 3/4 of an inch gap the roof is sagging.  Also look for the roof to spread, with the edges of the roof seal not sealing to the frame of the box, but overhanging the sides.  I loved my ABS roof and wish I had a good one now.  The replacement roof is not very nice.:(
