Has anyone done a repair to the awning "bag"?

Hi!  Newbie here.  We just bought our first pop up.  It is a 1993 Skamper 22c.  Cute little thing that sleeps 6...but the perfect size for just DH and I.

It has an attached awning that is enclosed in a canvas bag.  The only problem is that about 6-8 inches of the top of the bag -the part that connects into the  PU- has become dry rotted and is not attached.  The man that we bought the PU from was nice enough to give us about 8 feet of the connector material from old PU awning bag that could be re-attached to this bag.

Has anyone done any repairs like this?  If so how did you go about it, and how difficult was it?

Hope it makes sense as I am new to the lingo!  If it helps I will take photos tonight and post them.

It depnds on if you can sew or not. IMHO it may be easier to make a new bag than to try to repair the old one. If one part of the old material is rotten, more than likely, the rest of it may be just about as bad. You'll find out once you try to sew it.

Just take off the old one and use it as a pattern. It's just one long seam, sew on new zippers and sew on the "connector material" :D . This stuff isn't rocket science....trust me...if I can do it....anyone can do it.

You can buy the materials here:

I had a new zipper installed at an auto upholstery shop 2 years ago.  They checked to see if my bag was ok, before they did it.  If it wasn't they were going to make a new one for me.:)

Thanks for the input!

Tracy-if you don't mind me asking: how much did that cost?

Here is a  pic of our pop up - if you look a the awning bag you will see that the left side is not attached.  Sorry I didn't get a chance to take a better picture of the bag. :

It was about $45 dollars for the new zipper.  I didn't need a new bag and I don't know what they were going to charge.  I would call a few places and get a price.:)

I don't know how your bag is attached. My bag slides into a rail that is attached to the top. I take out the screws on both ends (that keep it from sliding out on it's own). Then I simply pull the bag straight forward or back.

If you can do this, you will be able to better examine the bag. Pull on the material. If it tears, don't try sewing it because it won't hold. If it doesn't tear, load it up and take it to a few awning shops and get estimates. I doubt f anyone could give you a fair estimate without looking at it..

What area do you live in?

Camping Coxes

Our bag was coming apart at the stitching that holds the plastic tubing that connects to the PU.  I called some upholstery shops until I found one who was willing to do it.  He did a great job and reinforced the other seams while he was at it!

Same thing happened to my bag.  I hand sewed it with heavy duty cotton/poly quilting thread.  Used a big needle and went in and out of the stitch holes.  Worked well and didn't cost a thing.  Took about a half hour of my time.
