Hi,

I live in Maryland and I just bought a used camper from someone in a neighboring state and I need to go pick up the camper.  Does anyone know if the Maryland MVA will give me a temporary tag to transport it home?  I cant seem to find anything online.   I know I will have to get it inspected before I get tags, but does this work like a car where they will allow you tags to drive to an inspection station?

Does anyone know how this works?  The MVA web site is awful. I'll be calling them tomorrow, but thought I'd ask the experienced campers on here just in case someone could offer some better advice.  I have a feeling I will get the same run around I did with my little trailer.

..someone help..I cant be the only person who wants to do this legally.  I really want to have my insurance company insure it if something happens on the way home.

Does anyone have any advice or experience in this?

btw..I  bought a 2001 Coleman Bayliner Elite.  I cant wait to get it home and go camping..it's been so long.  Anyone the owner of one of these?  I love the layout.

Thanks!!

Julie

I can't help you with MD laws, but congratulations on your new Bayside.:)

Welcome Julie,

Can't help you with the specific MD laws either.  However, I went from PA to OH to get the last camper I purchased.  I gave the information on it to my insurance company to get it insured prior to getting it.  I took the plate off my TV and placed it on the camper for the ride back.  The next day I went to a local independent licensing center (Brimmer's Auto Tags) and registered the camper and got a plate that day from them.

They said that I either had to bring the camper so they could see the ID Number off it or I could bring them a scratched sheet of the imprint (placing a sheet of paper over the campers ID number and using a pencil scratch over the paper to get the imprint of the number on the paper).  They said they would register it in PA that way.  If you are not going to get it right away, perhaps the current owner could create a scratch for you and mail it so you cold get a plate prior to leaving?  Not sure if it is the same rule in MD but it is just a thought....

Enjoy your new camper!

Jeff

Maryland doesn't have temporary transit plates (like PA).  I live in Western MD.  They might allow you to get your plates before you pick it up.  Where are you and where are you buying it from?

Thanks for the info everyone..

Jeff...I will be transporting the camper from NJ to Frederick MD. Only 2.5 hours.

Shen I called the MVA today..they said if I obtained the bill of sale (with notarized signatures), and a signed title, I could get a temporary tag.  Then I can get the camper inspected.  Once inspected I can get my permanent tags.

I was thinking of using the coleman tag from my old camper that is still good until the end of July but Im just afraid if something happened, that the insurance wouldn't pay if I didn't use a legal tag.

I should check to see if there is an independent licensing center in MD..didn't know there were such things.  Maryland probably doesn't allow them though..but I'll search just the same.

Thanks!!

In 1999 wife and I were down in Florida visiting relatives when we found a real bargain on  a 99 Coleman Santa Fe. It had been used just one time and then traded in on a TT... We camped for the next two weeks in five states, FL AL GA SC and NC with a cardboard tag that I made which said  NEW CAMPER tag applied for...Never got stopped or had any trouble.. If you have all of the sales paper work with you and are traveling back to your home state to register the trailer you should'nt have any problem..If it were me I would go for it......

I bought my PU from someone in PA and picked it up in OH ... sort of halfway  :p

I paid for the trailer and the previous owner sent me the title.  I then registered it here in MN (no inspections) and got a plate.  Sent the plate to PA so it could be towed to OH without any questions and then towed it home after camping for a week or so in OH.

Don't think it would work in your case .... you all have a lot of inspections out there!  I also had some time to work out the details.

Good luck and let us know when your PU is safely home!

Hey Jeff..I found one of those express tag places in MD.  Pretty cool..thanks for letting me know about it.  Here is the link for anyone interested.

Old Goat..Im a little scared to try making my own tag.  This weekend the cops will probably be out..since most people will be making a long weekend of it.

Kelly..I think we have way more regulations around here..and I believe it's really all about money...  there are fees for everything.

Actually, you're probably safe as long as you're not on US 15, I assume you're going to use 95 to get to NJ.

I had wondered if either you or the person you're buying from had an available tag.
