My wife's family is going to Bar Harbor Maine.  I have heard they have some great campgrounds.  Does anyone been there and know of a great campground?

All depends on what kind of camping you like. When we go there, we camp at the Blackwoods campground in Acadia National Park. No hookups, but more of a woodsy camping experience. Even though there are no hookups, there is potable water in every loop as well as bathrooms with flush toilets.

We stay at Blackwoods too.  I have looked at many of the commercial/private campgrounds on the island and the only one I would stay at is at the top of Somes Sound and i can't remember the name of it.  I will look later and post the name of the campground.:)

I would also have to vote for Blackwoods if you enjoy dry camping.

Although there are bathrooms, there are no showers in the campground.  There is a private shower place just outside the entrance.  I believe a shower is $2.

What is also nice are the free trolleys thorughout Acadia and into Bar Harbor.  Nice biking trails and hiking trails.

I'll be heading back up there in August.

If you plan to go during the summer, it is best to make reservations ahead of time.

I stayed at Mt. Desert Narrows.  Fairly large privately owned place.  It was clean (when I was there) and does have a pool.  There is a place to buy cheap lobster nearby :)

It was a short drive to Acadia Natl. Park which is the highlight of the area; Bar Harbor is pretty touristy.

Places in Acadia you MUST see:
Sand Beach at night (more stars than can believe -great park ranger program)
Hike the Precipice if it is open (sometimes closed due to Perigrine Falcons nesting).  The Beehive trail is also nice.  Mt. Champlain is real pretty.I thought Cadillac Mountain was a little overrated - to each his own. BTW - don't try Precipiece if heights scare you.

Lake Sargent  - water so clear I could see my toes 5ft down

I Did look at Blackwoods - looked nice, definitely more rustic (which is fine if you know what you are signing up for.

Good Luck on reservations; when I went I made them in January for the summertime -

Just returned from Blackwoods CG in Acadia and have to admit that of all the CG's we looked at while in the area, it's the only CG we would consider staying at. All the others that we looked at seemed more like trailer parks than CG's! We did not look at the one on Somes Sound, I hear that one might be nice.

Blackwoods has nice bathrooms, clean, although a few faucets were not working in some. Sites are not as private as we like, but certainly better than the others that we saw. Met the clamdigger who dug our Steamers while picking up lobsters at Parson's. Lobster and Steamers where among the best we've ever had.

Acadia isn't the northern forests of NH or ME by any stretch. You will not find much for solitude, but it is a beautiful place just the same.
