Hi all,

Hi,  I am hoping that someone might be able to help.  We are considering making a leap from our pop-up to a Class C motor home.  We are looking for a used unit.  We recently went to a dealer who tried to sell us a service contract on an older unit we were interested in.  Here's my question has anyone had experience with services contracts and are they worth it.  The unit we were looking at was a 1993 with 54K miles.  The service contract was for 2yr/24K miles for a total cost of 3200.00  Since we are just starting to look we are trying to educate ourselves as much as possible.

Thanks

Ps if anyone knows of a used unit for sales pls let us know.  We live in CT

Thanks again

A good friend's brother bought a brand new Coachman Motor home this last spring (March?), used it absolutely ONCE and decided he did'nt like "roughing it" - he likes condos on the beach front and such.

Needless to say the re-sale for motor homes at these times is not the very best. If you want to contact me via e-mail and let me know how he can contact you, will be glad to pass the information along.

You might have better luck to your questions over at RVNET
since they have a form on class "C" motorhomes
good luck :)

Some service contracts are "OK" and may protect you from catastrophic failure. Every service contract is different and unique. I used to be a Service Manager for a large Chevy Dealership in Los Angeles. I can tell you that I had a lot of experience with a lot of different service contracts and half of them weren't worth the paper that they were written on.

My advice would be to sit down and READ the entire thing. Get a mechanic, that understands the items that are talked about in the contract, to sit down with you. Mostly, don't expect the person that is selling you this contract to understand it. They tend to be very technical and very specific as to the things that they cover. Seldom do they list the items that they do not cover. The salesman probably does not have a working understanding of the procedures and items discussed in the contract. All he knows is that he gets a nice fat commission if he sells the contract to you. Often, they get more commission for selling these contracts than they do for selling the RV.

There are a lot of "RV warranties" on the market. You may want to do a Google search for one that best suites your needs. You don't have to buy it from the dealer. Just be sure that the place that will be servicing your RV, will honor the contract that you purchase.

I would be more than happy to give you some thoughts via email.  I used to work as an RV salesperson.  Notice the words USED TO.  Please email me if you're interested in the thoughts and things to consider.
