Just got back from Stone Mountain Campground.  Campground facilities are nice. Pool is on the small side for so many people.  Nice functions. Bath house near us was recently redone and was nice.  Lots to do within the park (see their website for more info). The negative is the condition of the pop-up sites.  Very few were level enough to have an enjoyable stay. I read that from some other post in here and thought "nah, it couldn't be that bad". Yes, it is.  The site we orginally booked - 192, was barely large enough for a tent.  It was classified as a pop-up site.   I don't even think the smallest pop-up could fit there.  It was a small area of dirt off the side of the driveway with a cliff on the other side.  We went back to the office to see what else was avaliable (someone else put a tent their later and the back edge of the tent was on the drop off of the cliff). Of the 7 sites left, only 1 was really usable with a pop up.  We learned some things getting the pop up level on the site we wound up with  (not that big of a deal).  We got the pop-up in, but it was downhill on either side of it. So, no patio area. Since we were not staying very long, it wasn't a big deal.  We drove through the rest of the pop-up sites and found maybe 6 that we would like to use (out of maybe 100 sites).  I wouldn't write off this park because there really is a lot to do and it's very family oriented.  Just know going in to it that the site might not be that great.  Frustrating thing is that the RV sites are better, but they won't let pop-ups stay in the RV area.

We weren't the only ones who switched sites. I saw a couple of other people pull back up to the office and go back in.

Also note that with so much to do in the park, you really don't stay at the camper that much.

Thanks for the review of the popup sites.  Sounds to me like they just decided to make tent sites into popup sites and chage a bit more.  Guess we will look elsewhere if we go to Stone Mountain in the future.  Too bad they don't do something about the sites.

We too have stayed at this park on more than one occasion.  Stone Mountain is a great place to be if you want plenty of activities around you.  The sites are not the best, I do agree, but getting one of the ones on the lake where the water taxi goes back and forth and the steam boat goes, makes it much more doable with bigger campers.  Because the entire park is basically built on and around a mamouth rising of granite, the ground is rocky and unlevel.  We have one of the larger pop ups (Coleman Bayside Elite by Fleetwood with two slides), and we were fine on the lake side sites.  The kids loved waving at the people on the boats.  The pool is clean and well kept.  Each morning, they offer coffee, juice, etc. at the pavillian, and in the afternoons, they made homemade icecream, giving children turns to turn the crank.    The playground is good too.  We live very close by, in Suwanee, GA, so Stone Mountain Park is one of our frequented places, two years having family membership passes, which was great!  Like the author noted, if you are going for the activity and park experience, you will be happy.  If you are going for a mountain camping experience in the wilderness, choose one of the North GA state parks!

Happy Camping!

I had replied to this earlier today, and noticed that the original author is from Alpharetta, GA.  I live in Suwanee, GA.  I have tried to explore pop-up camping clubs/groups in GA and haven't had a lot of luck.  Have found groups all around, but not a lot in GA.  If you pop-up camp and live in GA, would you be interested in exploring with me in starting up a club?  I am thinking something low key, maybe twice a year, a website possibly, etc.  I am not sure what is invoved in it, but I plan to learn and see if it is something I might enjoy.  We camp a good bit.  We are a family of 5 and many times bring our guinea pig with us.  Please let me know if you might be interested.  Thanks, and Happy Camping!
