In another thread on towing speed limits, there are two links provided to the laws regarding towing for each state.Trailer laws for boats
Trailer laws for RV's

Half of the States listed require that you cary flares when towing, something I was never aware of, but in order to be legal, will be getting a set of flares before our next trip.

Any one else unaware thet they are breaking the law

I carry flares whether towing or not. They stay in my truck along with a couple of folding reflective triangle thingies, my tow strap, chain, and emergency tool kit.

I have upgraded my pyro flares to LED's.

A little on the expensive side but for DW or DD driving, it is easy for them to use, should the need arise.

I've carried flares in my trucks for years (and have used them, too). In fact I might consider replacing the present ones as they are getting old. There one of those things that you might never need to use, but when they are needed ... they are NEEDED!  Spend a considerable amount of time in the mountains and on those sharp curves (especially going down hill), that's where they really do a service.

Many states that require you to have them will also take you to court if a fire starts because you used them.

Flares are a great way to start a fire.  I have them, but would only use them if there was absolutely no other way to deal with the situation.  I have triangles and flashing lights to use as warning devices.

Carry them, need to replace them as they are 7 years old by now!
Never used them. When I got rear-ended 10 days ago, the Fire Department was two vehicles in back of the person that hit me so there was no need for them.

I think I'll opt for the triangles next. Seems safer, fire-wise and all.

we carry both trangles for day, and flares for night

Don't carry them, but I have very bright strobes in my truck's white reverse lights, and those lights can be seen even while towing our popup. I guess I'm illegal in Tennessee.

I guess I'm also illegal (or maybe not?) when towing our ATV trailer. It is estimated to be 2800 pounds or less when loaded. Brakes are required in Tennessee for trailers over 3000#. It is rated for 3500# on the axle. I added brakes to the trailer myself, so my lashup is safer that way. However, I did NOT add breakaway cable and small battery needed for that. So I wonder if I'm in that gray area....

Anyway, if I am illegal because the trailer has brakes but no breakaway cable, I find that kinda funny. The lashup is safer now, but it was legal without the brakes.

Oh well. Sorry to hijack the thread, but it was related a little bit. :)
