Can I use a WDH on a Jayco 1006?

We're looking to buy a new Jayco popup and we'll be using a Honda Odyssey as the tow vehicle. Honda requires the use of a weight distributing hitch with any trailer over 1,800 lbs. I've read in some other forums that the Jayco trailers might be of "C" frame construction rather than a full box frame and that a WDH might bend the trailer frame. I'll have to call the dealer tomorrow but could have sworn that I remembered the frame construction as full channel. Is anyone else using a WDH on a Jayco popup? thanks!

I have a 1995 Jayco 1207.  I emailed Jayco at one point and asked if I could use WDH with it and they said no ... so I don't.

My TV is an Astro and they recommend WDH for trailers over 2000 lbs.  I weigh a little over that fully loaded ... probably around 2200.  (I know I should get the trailer weighed ...)

Good idea to check with the dealer ~ you may want to contact Jayco directly too.  They've always been very helpful to me.

Hi Pat;  I have a 2006 Jayco 1006 model, I do not use a WDH, I have a Dodge Durango, I can tow it fine but just throw it on the ball.  Tows like a dream !!!! Yes Jayco does use a C channel frame, which they do not build at the factroy. Mine has been in a few times for repairs though :(  I bought it in May and its on its 3 converter.  I hope when I go this weekend it will work right, plus a few other things need fixing. I have seen the 2007 Jayco 1006 model.  :(  I wouldn't buy that model. Same layout but they use a Jack-Knive sofa now on the side, gives you ALOT less room to walk by and you can't even open the swing doors below very far to open, what a poor design.  Thanks, J

I'm stuck with the WDH because of Honda's requirements. I'll have to take a look at the newer floorplans. Unfortunately, even Jayco's website still has the 2006 information.

I just called Jayco and they said someone would call me back regarding the frame construction issue. It's too bad that the dealers aren't aware of these sorts of things. The Honda Odyssey is a very popular vehicle, and you'd think that more dealers would have had some experience selling trailers to Ody owners. Maybe they just ignored the WDH issues??

I finally got a hold of Jayco today despite the fact that they never returned my call nor answered my emails. They said that that none of their popup trailers can handle the stress of a WDH.

We're now looking at the Fleetwood brand of trailers that have a more robust undercarriage.

I'm extremely dissapointed with the four Jayco dealers I dealt with. None knew that the Jayco trailer wasn't rated for a WDH, yet all were willing to install one. These guys need to be licensed when dealing with such issues that can affect safety. I wasted 3 weeks dealing with these various dealers. One dealer in Indiana even told me I was 'overthinking' the situation. Apparently he doesn't trust the advice that comes directly from Honda and from Jayco.

I called Fleetwood today and they verified that their trailers can support a WDH.

THis is not an issue that is limited to Jayco.  When placed alongside an RV salesman, even a used care salesman looks great.

No matter what brand you are looking at, do your homework before you even visit a dealership.
