Has anyone ever painted their interior furniture in their pop up? We have a 1979 Viking Saga that we are trying to re-furbish for camping on the may 24 weekend but the weather isn't cooperating  :(
We might want to paint the furniture because right now it's 70's style dark wood grain and we are planning to put in new flooring, what kind of paint would be good along with what ind of primer, is it hard to take the furniture out? etc. any tips would be helpful and welcome.

We repainted our interior cabinets/bench seats when we picked up our trailer to get rid of the darker 80's wood paneling and brown tile/curtains.  We used peel & stick tiles from Home Depot and a decent quality exterior oil based primer to prime the cabinets, then exterior latex paint on top of that.  It's been holding up pretty good to knicks & scratches.  Best part is I can just grab a brush, dip it in the can and the knick is instantly gone!

Check out the link in my signature for pics of the work we've done.

Hey, Jeremy, thanks for the tips and the link my trailer looks very similar to yours. How does your camper door attach to the roof? mine needs a new interior roof but I'm not sure how to attach the door to the roof when traveling, right now it just has foam on the interior roof but I have the latches I just don't know how to attach them. Thanks

Jeremy

mine uses two of these to hold the door to the ceiling when in stowed position

(sorry for the fuzzy pic, that's the pic the guy took on eBay)
Link here for them on ebay

I sent Palomino parts an email asking where I could order them from and how much. They responded with a phone number to call. So I called the dude and he said send him my mailing address and he would send them out to me. A day or so later I got a package with 4 of them in there for no charge.

Here's what mine actually looks like.  It's a little different than what they sent me, but the ones they sent me are for a friends Palomino we're in the process of restoring.

I painted my interior last year and replaced my flooring as well.  I used an exterior latex semi-gloss.  (I wanted a little shine).  My FIL put a mildew blocking agent in the paint.  Another trick he used was putting vanilla in the paint.  It cut down on the paint smell tremendously!  Check out my webshots link to see my before and after pics.

Jeremy,
I looked at your pics and I gotta tell ya...the old thing looks brand new. When you said you used spray and roller to paint, did you mean a regular spray paint can or did you use a spray gun? The roller...like you would use on walls?

I want to fix up the 94 Dutchman I bought and your pics really inspired me to get started on it NOW. Hope you don't mind but I might be bugging you on "how to do's" and "what to do's".

Again...nice job!

I haven't painted the inside of my camper - yet - but I plan to!

I've done quite a bit of furniture refinishing, but I never really liked painted furniture finishes. However, a few years ago I remodeled my kitchen and had to do so on a budget.  New cabinets were NOT part of that budget,  so I refinished and painted my kitchen cabinets - and found that I got a really nice, brush-stroke free finish with a small foam roller.

There are a couple of different kinds of foam rollers out there - the best finish comes from the denser ones -usually they are white foam and have a rounded end for getting into corners etc. You can get them at most local places like Home Depot, lowes, hardware stores, etc.  You DON'T want the yellow foam ones - they soak up too much paint and get sloppy too easily.

I painted the cabinet boxes with a off white color ( Sears  'Butter Cream' semi-gloss)  and refinished the wood doors - I didn't want a total painted look, and the cabinerts were originally 1960's & very dark, plain wood. So I stripped, bleached and refinished the solid wood doors. on the cabinet boxes I used those foam rollers & a  good quality primer for a base and a latex semi-gloss paint for the top coat. Despite 3 yrs of daily use, pets and kids, I haven't had to touch anything up - only wash them down occasionally from kitchen splatters and handprints.  They take scrubbing really well!

When I re-do my camper, I will probably do a similar color scheme to my kitchen.  I have some 'leftover' cedar closet liner ( tongue and groove)  & also some unfinished pine bead& board paneling, and I'm thinking of painting the cabinet boxes  and making new doors out of the cedar.  I figure it will help diminish any musty smell and repel bugs, too!  Not to mention how pretty the cedar is!

Thanks to everyone who has given advice on painting :) We are going to look into it but maybe not right away, there are other problems that need to be addressed such as the stowed door problem.
I have the latches that go with it to put the door up, I just don't know how to put them up, the previous owner took them down then put up styrofoam on the interior roof so I don't know how the latches attach to the roof anymore, do I have to remove some of the foam and if I do what will I find? and do I have to bolt them up somehow? and what about when I put interior panel up do I drill though?
It all seems so complicated as this is my first pup.
Thanks to everyone for the advice, I'm a newbie without a clue :D
