I have just started the "looking" phase of buying a new Jeep as DD gets her license soon and will be getting my 98 Grand Cherokee.  DH has a Comander as a rental car this weekend up in the tundra (Northern Michigan) and loves it.  Does anyone have one or know about them?  Other than the low mpg, what other issues do they have?

Thanks in advance,

Tena

A consideration for everyone getting a 4X4 should be the potential roll over issues and the related issue of roof strength and crashworthiness.  This is especially important if minors or those who tend to have a drink (just one...), or may otherwise be inexperienced, are the primary drivers.  NHTSA  has been dogged for over 30 years to test and regulate this and the related issues for 4X4s.  The manufacturers have been able to prevent meaningful reform from happening but lately some things are beginning to be mandated that will save lives.

Saying all this, the Jeep products such as the Cherokee have been the BEST because their (T/2H ) track width compared to height has been traditionally the best in the industry.   It is expected the Commander will follow the Cherokee type Jeep vehicles.  I will leave reliability, towing capacity and all that other good and important stuff to the awesome gear heads whom I learn alot from each time they share their input.

Just thought I would share something from a different perspective.  Good luck in your hunt for the right vehicle!

I may have posted something back in August/September when I bought my Jeep Commander and started towing with it. Can't remember for sure, anyway, I love towing with it.
I have the 4.7L V-8, H.D Towing Package, also has ESC- Elec. Stability Control that is really pretty amazing. Tried bringing it around twice in the snow- first time was accidental, second time on purpose, and the ESC took over and made it go the direction the wheels were pointing. Saw on the news they are pushing for all vehicles to have ESC.
Wish I could say I get GREAT gas mileage, but it's no worse than my 4.0 L 6 cyl Grand Cherokee was when towing, and within 1/2 MPG or so other times. ODDLY enough it's a 1/2 MPG better on the rural roads, Good- I live in Vermont!) and a 1/2 MPG worse on the interstates.

No issue with sway, even when I load more in the Jeep than in the front storage trunk on the Starcraft!
