Hey Trina,

I've been in a cave and missed this thread - glad that David made it through the surgery well.  We'll keep you all in our prayers.

Quote from: Camping CoxesDavid continues to improve.  As Dee said, the 2nd and 3rd day were a little tougher on him pain-wise.  We went in Friday and had the dressing removed and the pain pump taken out.  He has three incisions, and the hole where the tube from the pump was.  The doctor said David was able to use the computer as long as he doesn't move the shoulder around, and in fact it will be good for him to move the wrist and fingers around.  (However, his mouth and attitude got him kicked off the computer for while, so that's not an issue now).

Paul helped him shower today, finally.  Sponge baths just don't cut it for a 16YO boy!  He slept in today until 9:00 AM (he's been waking up at 6:45 AM at the latest since his surgery), but when he woke up he was in a lot of pain because it had been 10 hours since he had his last pain meds, and he had a headache (withdrawals from the Vicodin maybe?)  So we got him showered and ready for church, but he was still feeling pretty bad when it was time to leave, so I stayed home with him.  Eventually his headache went away and he's been fine all day.  He even ventured out to visit a neighbor friend for a few hours.

David goes back to school tomorrow.  I spoke to the asst. principal and he E-mailed David's teachers about allowing him to leave class early to avoid the crush of students in the halls during passing periods, and also about providing classroom copies of books.  I got an E-mail today from his Spanish teacher informing me he will need to bring in his book tomorrow.  I informed her he would not bring in his book because he can't handle a weighted backpack, and I will personally bring it to her in the morning when I bring him to school.  She is also the only teacher who initially refused to get him a classroom copy at our request, necessitating me to get the asst. principal involved.  We'll see how tomorrow goes.  She also sent me a copy of his pending progress report, which is so far an "F",  and informed me he's missing several assignments -- which happened to all be dated the week he's been out!!!!  Grrrrrr.  I'm not liking this teacher very much.

When we go to Temecula it will be exactly 1 month since his surgery, so he may be out of his sling already, but he'll still be limited.  No bike riding or swimming, no horsing around with the younger kids.  So any teenagers who want to invite him to hang out, I'm sure he'd appreciate it.  This trip I think we're going to have to allow him to bring the portable TV and Gamecube since he can't do much.

Again, thanks for the concern, prayers and well wishes.  We appreciate it.

Glad to hear he's doing ok. so how did school go??

hey Trina don't let Kevin & Zach know there is a gamecube around...otherwise you'll have 2 more borders for the weekend :J

Hmmm.. I not sure about this Spanish teacher..I see a call from the asst. prinicpal in her future :yikes:  I mean really, what is the big deal??

It's people like that Spanish teacher who give teachers who care a bad name.  Grrrr ...

We had back to school night tonight, and actually she seemed very nice. David did end up getting a copy of the book on a CD, which wouldn't work in our computer. She advised me to go to the book room tomorrow and see if I could get a hard copy. Instead I stopped by the office and one of the counselors was taking a message from me about it to give to the asst. principal, then told me to hold on. He walked over to a stack of books, pulled out the book we needed, handed it to me and said, "Solves that problem." I told him I love people who get things done. So he recorded the bar code of the book and all the pertinent information and I thanked him profusely and went on my way. If it was that easy, what was the big deal???

I talked to his teachers in the few seconds we had before the next group came in. Several said what a really nice kid David is and a few mentioned how conscientious he is about getting his work done. I was sure they were talking about a different David!! I'm glad if he's going to act out, he acts out at home with us and not at school. We've never had any disciplinary issues with him at school at all.

David is doing well at school. The teachers let him out about 5 minutes early so he can get through the halls. It seems to be working for him. He was having problems situating himself in those little desks (which is a problem because he's so tall anyway!), but I told him to either ask for a chair and use the desk with a freestanding chair, or reposition his desk so his arm is comfortable, whatever angle that requires. Today he said it went better.

His English teacher commented that despite it all, David's still smiling. I told her that was just the Vicodin! :p

How's David feeling?

Doing great, getting feisty and fighting with his sister, so all is almost normal.  Got his sutures out Friday and may get his sling off the 10th, depending on what the doctor sees then.  He's looking forward to sleeping flat again (his mattress is propped up at an angle while he's in the sling).
