Went to crank up my 2000 Coleman Bayside this evening and it cranked up with no ratchetting sound. It would not stay up? I've done a bit of research and it seems like I need a new brake/clutch pad? It that the correct diagnosis? I find it hard to believe that the only thing that holds my pop-up up is that brake pad?? What happens if that thing fails when we're inside??

Before you do anything else...

Sometimes, the ratchet can get goofed up, usually from over-cranking when cranking it all the way down.  It's easy to fix.  Crank the top all the way up until it will not go any more.  Then, if it's the usual problem with "no ratchet noise," the ratchet will catch and it will resume working normally.  Hold on good while doing this, because until the ratchet catches, that roof can and will come down fast, and will spin the crank fast.  You could get injured if it gets away from you.  Just hold on tight until it catches.  If it doesn't catch after you've cranked it all the way up, then you will need to service the lift winch.

Yep, that's the ticket.  Overcrank it when you pop it up.  My younger daughter cranked ours down and overcranked it at the bottom and the ratchet went away.  Overcranked it on the way up and like magic the ratchet is back!

wished that worked on an old rockwood I used to have,,,,,

The others have told you correctly.  Just over crank it at the top and you will feel it give.  Then you should crank it down a few cranks and then back to the top, to make sure it is clicking.  The cause is over cranking on the way down.  Once the top stops moving down, stop cranking.:)

The one time I have seen this solution, the roof made a gawdawful "POP" when it fixed itself.  But then everything was fine.

I was dutifully impressed.

THANKS ALL!
That did the trick!

I am glad it worked.  It is a bad feeling when your PU is not acting properly.:)
