One repair leads to another, to another......
'83 Rockwood.  Figured to take the aluminum covering off on the roof and investigate a leak.  Found the front board needs to be replaced.  Noticed the side boards are soft at the ends that meet the front board.  Spent hours on the phone trying to find a 10' section.
The only luck I had was with a building supplier who called their supplier and found "Industry Flake Board" that measures 24" x 10' for $20.  Problem is this is 3/4" and not the 1/2" I require.
My question for all you savy do-it-yourself-ers is this.....
Can I cut and splice/joint glue in a section to the sides or will that mess up the structual integrity of the roof?  Or should I replace with the 3/4" making the extra on the inside of the roof?  Or, since the softness is only about an inch on the edge, reinforce it somehow?
Any suggestions would be appreciated.  We're just trying to get one more year out of the ol' girl!!

Seems like using flake board might be a step backward?  Or is it some stepped up quality with special glues? You could get it planed down to 1/2" by taking it to a local cabinet or wood working shop.  Simpson makes all sorts of metal reinforcement plates and brackets, so hit the local lumber yard/building supply and you'll find something to suit your application.

The front face of my roof is soft and I'm sure all rotted inside.  I hadn't thought about taking the skin off.  The previous owner lag bolted two 1x4 redwood planks to the inside of the roof to reinforce it there.  Really sad as you can see in the photo.  It's gonna be a real challenge to undo that butchery.

I tried finding the same, only to be told I could get a 4x10 sheet of cdx for $70.00. When i went to order it I was told i had to order a minimum of 25 sheets and then the place did not sell to the public and I had to be a contractor. Plan B--I used 2 pieces on each side and connected with a 4x6 mending plate and 1/2" screws and glue. The roof sides and the aluminum channels on the roof bottom provide more strength and 3 trips with no problem including 10 hrs of solid monsoon on New Year's Eve. You can see the splice in the picture below taken before my roof was reinstalled on my 1982 Viking.

You might want to consider using plywood instead. You can take 2- 8' long pieces of 1/2" plywood and splice them together to make a 15' piece.

Just take the last 1' of each piece and cut it to 1/4" thick. Overlap the 2- 1/4" ends, glue and clamp them. You could use wood glue or epoxy. I would recommend epoxy. If you clamp it good and leave it for a couple days, the joint should be as strong as a full sheet. After-all, that's how they construct plywood in the first place. For added strength, you could drill some 1/4" or 1/2" holes and put dowels through them. Glue the dowels in and cut the ends off with a chisel after the glue dries.

If you want a real quality job, use marine grade plywood.

Nice photo.  Since I'm headed that direction with my roof is there any chance you could share more pics and any advice?
