For years while camping(mostly tent). I've relied on either the campfire or the camp stove to prepare meals (leave the bbq'ing for home). So mostly it's sauted, grilled, fried, stews, foiled and a few mre's. Now, I have found a nice little coleman oven that sits on the camp stove. Figure I can bake fish now instead of frying and I've been playing around this weekend with pilsbury dough products like cinnomon rolls, biscuits, cresent rolls so far. Looks like it will work fine. really wish I would have learned to use the dutch ovens, but that's another story. oh well. Conceivable, could bake a chix and other meat products, so suggestions on reciepes?

Don't trust the thermostat in the door of the oven.  If you wrap the oven in a layer or two of heavy duty aluminum foil it will hold the heat better.  Have fun with the oven.:)

I have had one of these ovens for years now and use it regularly. You can order an extra rack for it from Coleman if you want, I did and now can bake two pans of cookies at the same time. When I got the extra rack a few years ago it was only $5.00 with shipping. I just called Coleman and told them what I was looking for, and extra rack for the campstove oven, and the person took the order over the phone with a credit card.

I made a nice batch of biscuits in ours. Our hybrid has an oven so the Coleman oven doesn't get used much.

I have a tripod that I use over the fire to BBQ. It has adjustable height and a ledge to stop anything that finds the edge from dropping off. I picked it up at a KOA store for about $22.

I have been reading this thread, as I was wondering about those ovens. Myself, I plan to go with the dutch oven - and that is because of the scoutmaster in our Boy Scout troop. We have 60 kids in our troop, broken into 7 patrols. Each patrol has a dutch oven and usually we have some type of competition during the campouts as to who makes the best ducth oven food. I have had shepards pie, cake, brownies, and even flan ! - all cooked in those ovens, and all excellent (our troop is known to eat good!!!)

we use bar-b-que brickquettes for heat, and when baking we put the top on and set burning coals on top of the stove, one brickquette per 25 degrees so if it says bake at 350 thats like 14 coals (maybe an extra or two).

Those dutch ovens are expensive, HEAVY, and you need to keep them oiled, but they cook great !!!!!

I have been planning to get one and us it in the back yard on a fire, ha ha - and that was before I bought our pop-up!!

Good luck with your oven, wish me luck with mine

Hi, Most normal cook book recipes will work well with a Coleman oven.  We just ordered a Fox Hill oven for our Chalet camper.  Fox Hill has a few recipes on their web site //www.foxhill.net.  You might want to check them out.  Like you, we decided that a small stove top oven would be a great addition to our camper kitchen.  Have fun.           Milt, Appleton, WI  2004 Chalet, 2005 Dodge Caravan TV.
