Does anyone have recommendations for a campground near Charleston, SC.  Looking for a family friendly campground.  Any information would be great.

The Charleston County Park on James Island is a great place. Nice facilities and only 15 minutes from downtown Charleston. Do a Google search and their web site will turn up.

I agree 100%!  We stayed there last summer and found it a very nice place to stay, clean and friendly.  It is also a very pretty cg and has things to keep you and the children busy.

Thanks for the information!

Saw the add in the Trailer Life Directory for the same campground, The campground at James Island County Park.  Sounds good.  Does anyone know about the swimming set up?  Almost sounds that there is no swimming pool but seems you can go to a water park.  Is that correct?  If so is it worth it?  We will be there in July and a pool or some sort of water would be great.  Especially when the kids get cranky at the end of the day.

Also saw an add for Oak Plantation Campground.  Does anyone have any information on this one, which is also near Charleston, SC

Don't know a thing about the Oak Plantation C/G -

Since downtown Charleston is 15 minutes away from the James Island Park, Folly Beach is about the same distance in another direction. There on the west end of Folly Beach is another Charleston County Park, which you would have free access to in that your staying a county park already, you will have one of the finest ocean beach that you'll find anywhere. There will be showers and a place to change.  That ocean will wear them kids out in short order!

We stayed for a couple nights at Oak Plantation in summer, '05. I recommend it highly. It is spacious, clean, well-run, and has a nice pool. When we were there we found it a relaxing place to stay after enjoying the sights of Charleston.

I don't know how far you want to stay from Charleston but there is a SP campground called Hunting Island. Beautiful tropical paradise, a nice beach, and a lighthouse to visit.

We've stayed in both CG's mentioned...Oak Plantation and James Island County Park. Of the two, we favor JICP. The campground is located within the park which is open to to the public. Even so, the CG traffic is well controlled and restricted to campers only. If you have bikes, there are some great paved trails throughout the park. The water park is really nice and there is even a climbing wall there.

For something truly unique, there is a tea plantation not far from Charleston. It's the only one in the continental USA! They have tours and it's on our list of things to do next visit.

There are a few Charleston area pics in my Pbase album below.

James Island County Park is one of our favorite stops on our trips to Florida and we have stayed there many times and enjoyed every one of them. The park is well managed, maintained and the people are friendly. They also give a 10% discount to Good Sam members.
