What is the best way to control mosquitoes at your campsite? What brand of bug spray do you use? I got eaten alive while sleeping in PU. Was a great trip though!

When I head north for early season trout and steelhead have sure run into the skeeters!  Before it's time to head inside for bedtime I'll spray the inside of the camper to rid any hanging inside and hopefully all the effects will be disbursed by then.  For personal use I like the newer repellents that use Picaridin rather than DEET ~ much more pleasant to use and I've found it to be just as effective.
Last year we had a newer memeber to our group show up with some household flying insect aerosol spray and he sprayed all around the campfire area just before dark and darned if I don't think that helped!

I haven't had to deal with mosquitoes for years.

When we were on our boat, we used to burn citronella candles. That helped. In most of the island countries we used mosquito coils:

They seemed to be the most effective way to keep all of the bugs away.

I HATE BUGS!! :swear:

That's one of the reasons that we live in SoCal and mainly beach camp. :sombraro:

I camp and hunt in central Florida, in the spring and summer the skeeters can be rough.

If you are near water, you are surrounded by them so much you end up breathing them in, Yuk.

Anyway I use this product called "Thermacell"  a insect repellant pad is heated by the small appliance using a butane canister, all in all really small.  It works wonders if you are out scouting for early archery or sitting on the back porch.

Costs about 25 buck for the whole shootin match at the local walmart sporting goods, or on line from the vendor.

It really works

Mosquitoe coils! Place coils all around campsite, Table, grill or outside stove, on ground under your seat. They work well in camper also but, have a little smell to them. If I have broken ones I will just throw the pieces into the fire. I even use these when I have the kids outside past dark or dusk in the garage.

I second the thermacell.  I use it to hunt and camp and it works great.  Just put it under your chair and enjoy.....

AMEN!!!

I lived in Minnesota for 3 years & thought God had condemned me to that very, very hot place ...

Haven't been back since I left 35 years ago & don't intend to go again.  When I traveled to Alaska -- worse than Minnesota! -- I  always sent out a  "tester" person to check out the mosquitos.  If they said that they weren't too bad, I'd ask them to take lots of pictures & tell me all about their adventures when they got back.  This was in the interior -- the coast wasn't bad at all.

As far as I'm concerned, nothing works.  Studies have proven that, and anyone thinking otherwise is dreaming.  Sorry guys.  If you're one who gets tormented, there really & truly isn't anything that will work.  Those $2000 mosquito killing machines have actually been proven to ATTRACT more mosquitos than would normally be in an area.

I'm with Wavery.  So. Cal. is next to heaven when it comes to no mosquitos!

So far reports from the extended camping family have been favorable for the Thermocell. Several complaints about the refill cost and it only last one day if that.
The large "Mosquito Deleto" units act by attracting mosquito's with CO2 from burning propane and lure baits that get heated. The are best for long term and placed as far away from the living areas as posible, unlike the Thermo units. WHich work best as close as possible.

I still carry a case of Yard Guard as we camp in black fly areas and it's the first thing that comes out when we hit the campground as I can turn into a giant welt and itch to the point of bleeding before we get the trailer setup...LOL

The other day at Lowe's, they had the Mosquito Deleto marked down from $99 to $24.99. I almost got one, but decided against it.

The last few yrs we've used those "Off" lanterns. I will set up 2 of them in the site. Usually 1 by the popup and one by the table. They supposedly are good for a 15 ft radius each. I got them at Home Depot but have seen them everywhere from Walmart to CVS to grocery stores in summer. Each candle and pad (pad has repellent that is heat activated) lasts about 4 hrs. We use them at home for the patio when we have company over too. They work for us.
