Ok so I gave up on the awning w/ add a room and am just wanting to try an awning. I have the canvas awning with the rope that goes in the track instead of the plastic strip, and I have an awning off a 1985 Viking pop up. (I have 91 palamino pinto). I do have the 3 pole and each does require 3. Guess I'm just going to go out and try both see which is better. Quiestion is do I just put the awning directly on the poles or is there some piece I need because it seems like any wind will totaly make the awning eyelets come right off the poles. I've seen some have a metal bracket, my camper has one in there but it didn't come with the awning. I'd love to see some pics guys and gals. Thankyou for dealing with my beginner quiestions. Pics of your awning on would be great .

We use to have an ol' Rockwood (1982?) that had what sounds like your awning.  It has 3 gromet-holes along the edge which the tip of each of the poles petrudes through.  We would make a loop in the end of the tie-down strap (basic tent rope) that went over the tip to rest on the gromet.  When the rope is anchored with a stake, the downward pressure holds the awning in place.
Sorry no pics.  Hope this helps.

I just checked my Palomino book and what I guessed to be an awning rail is and awning rail. What's the purpose of the rail?? My guess is that I've seen some awnings with a flap that hangs over when set up, well neither of the awnings I have have that extra flap that hangs over, just straight with rope hookup on one end and eyelets on the other end.

I'm not sure If I understand, but assuming you have a way to connect the awning to your PU, you would put the poles in the gromets and like the previous poster said, use ropes over the top to the poles down to stakes in the ground to keep the awning from coming off as well as providing tension away from the PU to keep the awning taught.

i've attached a crude drawing trying to explain what i'm talking about.
