I have a 2005 Fleetwood Americana pop-up.  I would like to put a cargo box on top of the camper.  Is this okay to do?

mtnsue.....WELCOME TO PUT!!!

Check your owners manual to see what the Max weight for the roof is. I have seen numbers kicked around but 150# seems to be what most newer PUs go by.  If you have A/C, you must take that into account.

A couple of members have done some real creative things for roof-top storage. I'm sure that someone will come along soon and share with you.

I think that the best idea that I've seen was an adaption of this carrier:

Yes you can put a cargo box on top of the camper.  Do you have cross bars installed on the roof?  If not you might want to get them installed first and then attach the box to the load bars.  You could put the box right on the roof, but it may dent the roof.  With the roof closed you have a 300 pound capacity on the roof.  When it is up you are only supposed to have 150 pounds on the roof.  Good luck with the project and take pictures.:)

OC Campers

We have the Yakima cross bars installed on our popup.  On these cross bars we have 4 bike sleds and 1 Yakima cargo crate.  The crate is great.  We put our E-Z Up, generator, kid toys and sometimes our folding chairs in it.  On the way home if our outside mat is wet and dirty we will stick it in there too.  Our Yakima crate does not have a lid but works great for what we need it for.

How did you install your Yakima cross bars on your popup? Do they bolt all the way  through? I would love to but my bikes and kayaks all on the top.

Welcome to PUT!  It depends on your roof.  Originally I had an ABS roof on my Coleman/Fleetwood PU.  On that roof the "feet" for the cross bars were bolted through the roof.  When that roof failed and was replaced with an AlumiTite roof.  The new roof has rails for the "feet" built in, so no drilling was required.  What camper do you have?:)

Thank you for the welcome. I have a 2003 Viking Saga 2107. On my old 1987 Rockwood XL Popup I had an aluminium bike rack that I bolted through the roof. What does Yakima use for backing washers or plates inside the camper?
Thanks............

I purchased the kit from Coleman/Fleetwood.  The bolts came through the roof and there was a gasket and metal plate that went between the roof and the bolts.  I would contact Viking or Yakima and see what they recommend.:)
