Embarrassing, yes, but does anyone else use kitty litter this way?

I had someone describe the way they dealt with potty issues, and it sounded logical and easy; they have a Luggable Loo type potty, that is, a 5-gal. bucket with a plastic seat.  They line it with a small white garbage bag and put a couple of pounds of clumpable kitty litter in it, enough for a single use.  When finished, they remove the bag and get it ready for the next person.  Very little muss or fuss.  I'm thinking of trying this out, and I'm wondering if anyone else has tried this (and is willing to admit it!).  Thanks for any and all input on the subject of output...

Never thought of that one. I used to use a Lug-a-loo but DW hated it so we bought a Portapoddy.  If it works, go for it. Good Luck..............

Try this...it's called "Kitty Litter" cake, and it's actually really good. I took it to a potluck we had at work once. Don't wig out, the brown things are tootsie rolls. It makes a great conversation piece too.

Sounds similar in concept to the 'PETT Toilet'.  http://www.thepett.com/

I purchased my PETT toilet and WAG bags through Cabelas. Great product. The best part IMHO, regular landfill disposal makes it easy for the dry campers.
I'll bet the kitty litter works fine too.

When we tent campted and first started camping we used a small trash can with a bag just for emergencys i.e. storms, can't make to the bathroom.  I put a few paper towels down and bought some camper blue stuff for the potty and just put about a tsp in it it helped with the odors.  I would worry no matter how hefty the bag you are using you put a couple of pounds of kitty litter in it and I'd worry it would break open then what a mess you'd have to clean up.  That stuff is heavy when it absorbs liquid (well even before too).

We still use the Luggable-Loo. Put in a half-gal. of water with a cap full of blue stuff. For transporting to dump, I put the top to a mud bucket on so it doesn't splash on the way to be dumped. Cheap, simple and virtually maintenance free.
When our original bucket broke, I got a food-grade pickle bucket from my local pub so now my pot is green!

If you bring one of those to a church function, I will resign from the church.

I keep a couple of the 5/gal plastic buckets aboard the popup ... one's a nice &  clean white one and the other is really a gray one, that's really used a gray water bucket (and maybe isn't maybe so nice & dainty). Plus, I keep in one of the storage holds, for cases of emergency, one of those "Luggable Loo" toilet seats that snaps right onto the top of a 5/gal bucket. I use "it", if need be, with a plastic bag, and when it has been pressed into service, has worked out real well. Bought the thing from Cabelas and I think it was $ 9.95, but do make a 5/gal plastic bucket very comfortable!

On a couple of our back into the boonies, where we had to improvise setting up a "facility", we cut the bottom out of a 5/gal plastic bucket, dug a hole, setting the modified bucket into the hole a ways (a deeper hole still continued deeper) and we moved the location every other day. That worked out well and when we were ready to break camp and head for home, the bucket shell was placed into a trash bag along with other trash items and dropped off at the county's trash collection site.

I know we have to do what is necessary to make camp life for those who are near & dear traveling with,  comfy,  but I prefer the simplicity of the "Loo" as compared to a chemical toilet. And it's a lot cheaper!  Afterall, I've got gasoline to buy; and heaven knows, our president's friends really have a need for the extra cost of that gas!

We're about to take a non-camper trip on the WI river in canoes - camping on the sandbars - no 'facilities' anywhere.

In the past, with scouts - we usually pick a private spot & dig a hole - When we leave, we'flush' the hole in the sand with a bucket of water.  Any 'solid' waste & paper must be picked up and packed out - however, I suspect that most of the boys did not admit to needing 'pack out' bags - they just buried it.

Being a pet owner who travels with my Golden Retreiver, Fizzy, I am ALWAYS prepared with pooper bags - if I can pick up after my dog - I can certainly do the same for myself!

I like the idea of the 'lugable loo' and have thought of getting one for this river trip (which we've done a few years now, either with Scouts or with friends) and keeping the 'loo for 'emergency use ' for the camper.

I never thought of using cat litter - but since I have a cat, and my BF has 3- it does make alot of sense.

The clumping litter is easy to use - I'd just get a kitty litter scoop (like the one shown in the picture above) and scoop the litter. - don't ever throw that stuff in a toilet or  RV disposal station though! the clay would stop up the plumbing! You'd have to scoop it into a grocery bag, tie it off and put it in the garbage.  Since it IS clay - (and has to be biodegradable for the pets - it is a problem for some long haired cats to use clumping litter, as the dust gets on their fur - they ingest it by licking, and it's clumping action give them stomach trouble) you could scoop and bury the clumps - it you were truly boondocking, or you could dump the waste down a Latrine (pit toilet) without - the plastic bags.  there are no chemicals in it that would pollute the ground or whatever.

(Please don't throw plastic or 'garbage' down a latrine - most places that have 'pit' toilets do have to have a septic truck come out once or twice a season and pump them out - they no longer simply cover them and start over - the parks would be full of old toilet pits!  When people put trash, sanitary supplies, and PLASTIC down there, it clogs the truck hoses and some poor shmuck has to clean it out by hand.  I wouldn't wish that job on my worst enemy - or even my ex-husband!)

Something that is much lighter than cat litter - is the new 'gel granules' - they are meant for mixing with or replacing your cat litter, and are much lighter - esp to pack IN - they usually come in a large mouth plastic jug (like a laundry detergent jug, but clear & large mouth)  so they would stay dry and store for a long time.   the material is the same stuff used in baby diapers - it expands when wet, absorbing the liquid and neutralizes the odors.    I don't think it's as easily 'biodegradable' as clay litter - but it does control the cat smell MUCH better than the best clay litters I have tried for the cats. (and believe me - cat pee is MUCH more toxic smelling than human!) if I were going to plastic bag and throw the stuff away - the crystals would be the way to go.
