We have a 1990 Starcraft and our TV requires a WDH. I have been told that the trailer cannot use a WDH. My question is what is the worst that can happen to the trailer if I use a WDH?

Some Starcraft PU's can handle a WDH and other models cannot. About the only way you'll know for sure is to go to the source and call Starcraft tech services, let them know the model & year of your PU and they can tell you in short order what your options are.

Using a WDH on a frame that is not engineered for it will cause stress and flexing to the frame that was not accounted for in the design.  The worst that can happen is  that the frame may twist, crimp, bend or actually fail.

Rather than merely supporting the trailer tongue weight (TW), weight distributing hitches apply leverage between the towing vehicle and trailer causing the TW to be carried by all axles of the tow vehicle and trailer.  When TW is distributed in this way, trailers with greater TWs can be towed, resulting in a more level ride which reduces stress on the rear of the tow vehicle and provides greater steering and brake control.  A weight-distributing system includes a receiver attached to the tow vehicle, a removable hitch head and spring bar assembly that fits into the receiver opening and hook-up brackets that connect the spring bars to the trailer frame.  As you have found out, due to the mechanical forces exerted upon the vehicle structure by a WD hitch it can NOT be used on all vehicles or all trailers.
