Hotel or camp in Las Cruces??

Well, the whole area of Las Cruces is booked up because of the Nationals tournament.  We were able to squeak into a Motel 6 today because another team who had gotten a little over confident and already booked rooms didn't qualify after all.

Here's my quandry -- my mom really wants to go, David really doesn't want to go.  Only rooms available have one queen bed.  I can put Emily on an air mattress, but don't know how 71YO Grandma will do on one.  With Paul's back, I really don't want him on one either.  If we had our trailer, we'd all sleep comfortably with the two king beds and the couch, etc., and be able to do our cooking, even if just sandwiches, rather than eat out constantly.  I'm thinking, frankly, we'd be more comfy in the trailer.  If we pull our trailer and stay in the KOA in Las Cruces, we'd be equally distant to the field as the motel would be.  Only thing is Emily wouldn't be at the motel her teammates are at, but she doesn't tend to do a lot of socializing with them other than if they're allowed to go into the pool.  Nothing says we can't hang out with the team at the motel during free time though.

I haven't run this by Paul yet, but I know he's going to complain about the Suburban only having three gears, can't go fast, etc., but you can't go fast pulling a trailer by law anyway!  I'm going to run it by him when he wakes up from his jet lag sleep-off.  We were going to rent a minivan to fit everything, especially if David went (my Pacifica seats six, but not with all our gear too), so this would actually save us money in the long run I think.

What are your thoughts?  Am I totally off base on this or does this sound reasonable?

Well, Trina, if you've got the time it might be fun to camp.  There's a lot of country between here & there, and if you've got AC it wouldn't be too bad.  I'd camp.  As far as I'm concerned, there's nothing better for a good night's sleep than knowing you're sleeping on your OWN mattress without anyone else's ... story  :yikes:  on it.  Lot of plusses for taking the PUP.  It'll just be a slower trip.

Let us know what you decide.

Here is our two cents worth.
Will the manly man truck make the trip? How much driving time do you really have? Can Paul sleep on a roll-a-way bed? Ask the hotel if they have one. Then take the mini van and brother stays home or at a relatives house.
One other thought is go to wal*mart and buy just for the stay there; one of those memory foan mattress for Paul for the roll-a-way. Small price to pay for a priceless memory of seeing Emily's team go all the way!
Have you checked to make sure there is any opennings at the KOA campground?

Oh, that's the phrase I"ll use to convince Paul -- "without anyone else's ... story on it."  LOL

Paul wants me to call the hotel and see if we can get another room adjacent to ours for my mom.  Great.  Double the expense.  And Grandma's on a fixed income, so asking her to cough up some dough wouldn't be a good thing.  AARGH.

How much driving time do you really have? I'm self-employed, so I have as much as I need.  Paul's boss is pretty flexible, as long as Paul isn't supposed to leave the country of anything.

Can Paul sleep on a roll-a-way bed?  No.  He has a bad back and I wouldn't want to risk it.

Have you checked to make sure there is any opennings at the KOA campground?  I used the online reservation maker last night to check, and they have three different categories of sites available as of then.

Well.  If the decision was mine, if there's no extra room at the Motel, then it's a done deal.  Go for the KOA.  It just CAN'T be any worse than a Motel 6.

Trina, My concern is the truck, you will be traveling in 115 deg weather all the way there. also the allowed towing speed is different for each state. When we went to Grand Canyon the speed was 70 in AZ. ( you can get the info from AAA.)

I wonder if you can rent a truck somewhere or have you checked with the KOA sometimes they have those cabins or maybe there is a local RV dealer that rents out trailers and/or RV's and they usually deliver and set them up for you

I hate to say it my Hair on my neck is saying no to driving the suburban

Paul is agreeing with you. He'd rather strap one of those travel bags to the top of my Pacifica and cruise at 75-80 with good AC and leather seats, etc., and pay the money for the motel.
