Hello,

Does anyone have any idea where I might find a battery box that would hold 2 Group 27 batteries.  I've looked for toolboxes, bins, etc that might hold them but haven't found anything yet, short of making my own.  What do people who use two 6V batteries have for a box?

Thanks for any help

Nick

You can use 2 separate boxes.

I'm not a great proponent of 2- 6v batteries. The problem is, if you have a bad cell in one battery, you will not have 12v and the bad battery will degrade the good one rather quickly. It has the potential of ruining a camp-out.

I feel that having 1- 12v battery with 2nd one as a spare to use when the 1st gets low is a better way to go. This way, if you get a bad cell, you still have 12v in the other battery and can continue your camp-out. This also gives you the ability to charge the 1st battery if you have a battery charger and can find 110v to charge it. It also gives you the ability to go out and buy a new 12v battery to replace the defective one, in the event of a failure). This is much more difficult to do with a 6v deep cycle. The 2- batteries must be a match and few places carry 6v deep cycle batteries.

I realize that 2-6v deep cycle may offer a certain amount more capacity (however, I think that may be over-blown). I (personally) just don't think that it is worth the risk. I have had a lot of experience using 6v battery banks. At one time, I had 4 banks of these batteries on my boat. I finally gave up with the hassle and switched to 4- 8D (large truck batteries) gel-cells. I used battery power on my boat for all of my living needs for 14 years 24/365, all over the world.

The only way that I would consider going with 2- 6v is to carry a 3rd as a spare.

Yes there are several manufacturers of double battery boxes, BUT I'd recommend jsut using two of the $7 standard Wally World plastic boxes.
Why? Well your average double box runs at least 10 times as much. It the economy of scale. They make several million single boxes each year and ony several thousand double boxes.

I have a group 24 on the tongue, and a group 27(with battery box) that I carry in the truck.  I outfitted the camper and both batteries with Anderson SB50 connectors.  I place the spare battery under the tongue when I set-up, and plug it in first.  When it gets low, I unplug it and plug in the group 24.  Works great and gives me way more battery than I need.

IMHO.....That's a very wise set-up.

For extended camp-outs, I'll bet that it would be easy to find someone that would let you charge the discharged battery at their powered campsite. ;)  You are also protected in the event that one battery goes bad.
