My Husband and I recently bought a 2003 Rockwood Camper. When we went through our orientation we complained about the door not latching well.  They said it had to be level in order for it to latch.  We have taken it out twice now and neither time were able to get it to latch well.  This last time the levels indicated we were level and the door latched but that night I kept hearing creaking like settling and by morning the door would not stay closed.  We are considering replacing the latch with something more secure, can anyone give me any advice on what we can do to secure the door.

You could replace it with any lock but the problem isn't with the lock it's with the movement of the trailer side coresponding to the door.

PU's get a lot of their rigidity from the box. Problem is one side of the box is missing a large area. The door space. It's not uncommon for PU to get what's called "the ghost door". It's cause by weight cantilevered out acting to spread out the top of the box. What is the weight cantilevered? You climbing into the bunk end.
A"fix" is moving the striker a little so the spread still allows the lock catch to catch. Run out of adjustment ability, then what we've had to do is increase the loading on the stabilizers so that side of the trailer won't spread so the catch misses the striker. On one used trailer with the door behind the axle we actually had to add a screw jack between the door area and the rear of the trailer to stop the flexing.

this is happening to us as well.  Is there any newer locks out there that would help to get rid of this problem?

I have the same issue with my door on my new 2007 Rockwood 2516G.  It didn't latch at the dealer when I picked it up last week.  Now I have to leave it at the storage lot with a door that not only will not latch, but the flimsy lock doesn't work either.

My solution was to install a locking hasp and a padlock.  Even though I was cringing the whole time I was drilling into my brand new baby!

Such a welcome to the world of PUPs

I had this happen to me on my coleman only when I put too much tension on the awning.  I think the tension on the awning was pulling the top of the trailer in that direction, pulling the door out of square.  Problem fixed by lessining the tension on the awning.
