New camping clan

Greetings all,

Just bought a 1992 Jayco Deluxe 1006. Seems to be in very nice condition. When I get home my family and I are heading out west for 3 weeks. I plan on having the bearings replaced and was thinking about buying LT radial tires for the trailer. Is this neccasery? We are planning on staying at Good Sam parks along the way. Keeping our milage to about 200-275 per day we drive so we can stop and be tourists.

Thank you. When I am in the states I can usually be found in Indiana. Out trip next summer will take us up to Glacier NP - down to Yellowstone - then to Branson before heading back up to Indy.

Welcome to PUT:).  You don't need to put radial tires on your PU.  I would recommend that you keep trailer tires on it, either radial or bias ply.  If the tires are more than a few years old I would replace them.  Most trailer tires fail from dry rot, not from being worn out.  It sounds like a great plan.

Thanks for the tip. What I was actually wondering was I had found some trailer radial tires as well as bias ply. I wondered if for about 40-60 dollars more per tire if it was a good investment. Thanks,

I like the mileage limits that you are settting.  That will give you time to smell the roses on your trip and enjoy the sites.

Good Sam parks can be fine but don't neglect the state and national parks.  

Around the Branson area, there are some CORE parks that are really nice.  Run about 17 a night with e/w.   There is one on Table Rock lake that is only a couple of miles from Silver Dollar City.

If you can, get reservations at Yellowstone and Glacier.  Great camping experiences in both places.

Gene, This will be my families first camping trip ever  :-() . My kids will be 15 and 13 this summer. I leaned towards the commercial parks soley for "creature comfort" reasons. We can do laundry, the kids can swim, and most of the towns I chose have tourist attractions that we can visit in the afternoon/early evenings after set up. At National Parks  :U  like Rushmore / Glacier / Yellowstone we are staying 2-3 days, so that we can un-hook and drive to the parks and spend at least one day. (I only have 4 weeks home this summer before I head back to Iraq).

Welcome to the forum. You will find lots of helpful and knowledgeable people here.

I would like to second GeneF's suggestion about not ignoring state parks. Many of them have full hookups with clean showers and they cost much less. You could easily use them as a base if you are siteseeing in the area. I have camped in commercial cg's so that the kids could swim too but I have found some sp's that have lakes you can swim in. Don't overlook making a sp a destination in itself.

It sounds like you have a nice trip planned. I'm sure it will make some lasting memories for all of you.

Everybody, Thanks.   I remember as a kid camping with my folks (truck camper) and spending summers up in Canada and Nova Scotia. Had a great time. I hope that my kids will enjoy it and that I will find it more relaxing than "camping" with the Marines :eyecrazy:


This particular group/forum has been very informative and I enjoy reading most of the posts/ideas.

Lastly, my bride set the camper up by herself Saturday at the house, and we had a heckuva thunderstorm roll thru, and when it was over not a drop of water inside our brand new 15 year old camper! :-()
