Olympian Wave Heater. Fan?

Well I found out the hard way that when its in the teens outside my battery won't last all night to run the furnace. So, one options is to get another battery and charge with a generator during the day which is expensive considering I don't have a generator or a 2nd battery yet. Or find another way to heat my PUP. I found the Olympian Wave heaters after doing some searching online.

Note: I regularly camp at 8500+ ft. elev.

These heaters can be used at high elevations and do not use any power, just propane. They also operate on low pressure propane so you can plumb it right into the PUPs system. I also read they produce very little emissions if any due to their high efficiency.

So, does anyone have experience with these? Do they disburse the heat throughout the PUP? Would a portable battery powered fan work to disburse the heat? Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
D

Bought a Wave 6 used in late August.  You can read about my experience here in the forums.

I like it alot.  I bought the feet for it, and have it on a quick disconnect coupler with 10' of propane hose.  The hose stays coiled up under the sink when the heater is not in use.

The heater cranks the heat out and with a small battery powered fan like an O2Cool fan from Walmart, you'd be golden.

Remember to crack the roof vent and one window.

Thanks for the reply.  I am seriously considering the Olympian Wave 6 heater.  I have also seen the O2COOL fans.  Is your fan loud?  I would want to run the heater at night and run the fan to distribute the heat throughout the trailer.  The last time I went camping it got down to 19 degrees outside.  My battery died in the middle of the night and I woke up to it being 37 degrees inside the trailer!

Sierra86,

Be sure to read this thread also. I surely wouldn't use it at night, although during the day you're aware to spot any troubles.

Have a good one.

Sierra, I apologize for missing out on an important part of your post.....that you do a lot of camping at high altitude.  That means less oxygen for your "new" heater and that means it will burn less effeciently and therefore give off more emmissions. That means an increase in Carbon Monoxide.

You might want to call the engineer(s) at Camco who make the Olympians and talk them(him) about operation at that altitude.  If I remember right, he told me that they were very efficient up to 5,000' but after that, performance dropped off and emmissions came up a little.

A CO meter from an RV supply would be a great little item and then if you do get the Olympian, you can do your own testing to decide if the performance is where you want it.

As was mentioned, the 12" O2Cool fan is pretty quiet on the low speed and they run forever on a set of D-cells.  They were $13 at Walmart, but then recently someone posted that they had come way down in price.  There is also a 5" version available, but don't get the one with the foam blades.....super noise!

Here's a site where I found the nicer 5" version, but I haven't ordered one yet.

The olympians are on ebay alot, so that might be a cheaper way to find out if it's what you'd like to have then to go out and pay full pop for one.
