We have been blessed to recently purchase a home with a wonderful lake view on a dead end road.  Partly because of that (and we can be hermits on the weekends) we are finding that going camping holds a different criteria for us now to get us to leave home.
Although we like the occasional group trip with friends, camping has become for us all about the quiet and solitude of nature.

So... where can we go where it feels like you are close to alone

Do any of you know of areas to go that are off the beaten path, mostly quiet, sparsely populated etc?  We like to hike, fish and canoe small lakes.

Your driveway! ;)

Now that made me LOL

check out the national/state forests and permits for dispersed camping - not in the campgrounds

it all depends upon your length of stay, so look into added propane and battery capacity, as need be.  also consider solar system to recharge batteries.  then you just need a water supply nearby.

I have not heard of that before, thank you.  I looked it up and it seems to be just what might work for us and some other people we know.

Thanks again!

Where did you find info on 'disbursed camping'?   I'm from Northern IL / WI border and would like to do some dry camping, but the WI state parks don't seem to list any areas to  'dry camp' or 'disbursed camping' - only the listed, established campground sites.  I'd also be interested in campsites in Illinois.

We're longtime tent campers, so we can do without the electric amenities or even the battery hookup, as long as I have a decent bed to sleep in and a road smooth enough to get my 35 yr old camper there on one piece!

Do youhave any links you can post and share?

it's dispersed camping.  you need to find your state or national "forests" in your area, NOT "parks"

Also, NOT the campgrounds.

In Wisconsin it appears to be called wilderness camping... start here...
http://dnr.wi.gov/forestry/stateforests/

find some forests, then call them...

"Backpacking and Wilderness Camping. Visitors should check with the offices of individual state forests to see if backpacking and wilderness camping are available. If these activities are allowed, visitors must obtain a permit from the forest office before heading out to camp."

Good Luck!
