Quote from: McCampersI didn't think you could burn sand?  Why would they have a burn ban if there is nothing to burn?  Just curious.

We have alot of sage bushes and brush and other dry plants that will light up like kindling. I seen some pretty bad fires here, nothing like the ones they had in California though. I've never seen a good fire though..

Quote from: AZsixI think your idea of the desert is different than what it actually is. We (at least I don't) don't do much camping in the desert during the summer when the temps can be 110-118. But even so the desert does have a lot of brush and cactus that will and does burn every year. Most of the camping here in the summer is up in the mountains among the trees. If you watch the news you will see that we have forest fires every year and many times they destroy homes and businesses. It's up there that the fire restrictions kick in. There are also places where riding atv's is forbidden during high fire alert.

We camp at Lake Mead and at Terribles RV park in Paharump in the middle of summer, i just put the reflectic in all the windows of the PU and the AC will keep the inside of the PU in the 70's.  Both of these places have fire restriction in the summer and neither place is in the mountains. We',ve camped at Mount Charelston and we saw some of the homes that have been destroyed by fires, what a waste......

Wow, you guys camp in some extreme places.  I like my 1950ish looking camping in the woods with lots of flannel shirts and the big clonky hiking boots with the red laces.  You just have to have an ax sticking out of a stump, a lantern, and a cast iron skillet to make it look truly authentic.  I suppose you should listen to Woody Guthrie and Burl Ives music and that would make it complete.
