Has anyone bought an extended warranty for their camper? If so , how do you like it ?

We bought one for our Jayco. If I remember right it is for 5 years on top of the 2 year manufacture warranty. We figured there are too many things that could go wrong with the camper. I would rather pay a $100 deductible vx. the cost of a full repair. Our Jayco came with an electric awning. I know that will break eventually or the fridge or the a/c.

We never used to buy warranties.  But lately it seems nothing ever holds up like it should.  And when it needs to be fixed, the cost is unbelievable.  I would rather pay a small fee every month than have to come up with a big chunk of change in case of a problem.

Jacqui,

You may want to check your extended warranty. Often times they do not include items that are added to the trailer that are covered under a separate warranty, like your awning, fridge, AC etc.

Most extended warranties are great.....until you need them then they're often not worth the paper that they are written on.

Read the contract very carefully before you buy it. If you have to ask the salesman questions about what it says, there may be a problem. Most of these people don't have a clew what those contracts say or what they mean. They get a big fat commission when they sell it (up to 1/3 of the price of the contract) and that's all they care about. Some of those contracts are purposely written to be confusing and those should be avoided.

When you need it and say, "Ya but the salesperson told me that was covered", you will find 9 times out of 10, that salesman is no longer employed with them.

Thanks Wayne, I will have to take a look at it.    As you said, the salesman swore to us that everything was covered on it.

Hi,
We purchased a 5 year extended warranty with our '05 Rockwood Roo. Like others, we figured there were more things to go wrong so a little extra insurance would be good!  NOT!!!!!!!
The warranty is only as good as the dealer and/or the insurer. Ours was the pits on both parts. When we had a problem with the seal leaking around the front bed end, we were told that all they would do was replace the gasket. If that didn't fix the problem, tough. We were on our own. It didn't fix it and we couldn't get the warped bed-board fixed or the stained canvas. The insurer was very difficult to contact and the service company had been sold and didn't leave any previous records for past customers with the new owner. We were lucky enough to trade the Hybrid in at another dealership for a good price on a new travel trailer and we asked a multitude of "what if" questions and got all answers in print before we purchased an extended warranty of any kind. Lesson learned, we hope!
Good luck,
Cheryl

OC Camper,

Checking with my dealer for the Jayco extended warranty was really costly.
Do they do all the work for you under the warranty. I do know it is 100 buck deducable...
I have been talking with Waranty Experts and there cost is about half of the cost of the dealer... Only 50.00 dollars per visit.  I am not sure who is going to rip me off the worst...

I have not, nor would I, buy an extended warranty.  I figure I've saved so much money on exorbitantly priced warranties that I can cover the cost of repairs on my own.  I was quoted a price on an extended warranty for our current camper, it was outrageously expensive.  I'd be able to cover the cost of several if not many repairs with that outlay of cash.

Our current camper is out of warranty.  We did have several issues covered under warranty at no charge.  Number of repairs needed thus far since warranty expired... 0.  If anything did fail, most likely I'd take on the repair myself to make sure it got done right in the first place.

The extended warranties are pushed hard because they make a lot of money for the dealers and insurers.  If they're making money, someone else is losing money.  Guess who the losers are?  They're just a bad deal all the way around for consumers.  A few will "get lucky" (?) and find that the extended warranty was helpful, but I'm sure they are the minority.

I hear what you are saying... But my Jayco has been in for work at least once every year. Most of the time for the same problem, leak over bunk ends. They have replaced it six times now in two years for many reasons. I do not think it is going to get better as time goes on.. I was going to trade it in for totally enclosed trailer but the differance was about 10,000 dollars. To much to losefor now.

I hear your pain.  But, your big assumption is that an extended warranty would cover the costs.  Often, they are structured so it's very difficult or impossible to collect on them.  Seems as though there's a lot of abuse in the extended warranty industry.  There should be a lemon law on campers, but that's another thread.

OC Campers,

I have the same model as you but it is a year older. When I try to get Joyce

I keep forgetting to ask my hubbie about the warranty.  For some reason, I have this feeling it was thru the dealer.  After everything everybody has said, I am a little concerned.  I need to go thru the trailer paperwork and find the warranty papers.  I will let you know what I find.  We are going out in the camper this weekend.  A perfect time to look over the paperwork.

If it was leaking during your original two year warrantee with Jayco, (I am assuming you are the original owner) then why isn't Jayco taking care of the problem?  Have you tried to contact Jayco customer service?

I have had very good experience with Jayco and have talked to their reps.  Seems to me that your dealer should be doing a bit more for you, if he isn't, then I would call Jayco.  No need to have to fix something six times.

If it hasn't been done, try replacing the rubber gaskets that run around the seals.  They have metal inside and that metal can rust out and you will get a leak.  Check that seal.  I had that problem with my 03 23B and with my new tt.

Extended warrantees are a waste of money according to most experts.  They recommend you put the money in a savings account and leave it there in case you need it.

It was an aftermarket warranty, I'll have to pull out the info on it. Aftermarket warranties are generally a big problem for autos so I am slightly worried.

The thing is , the dealer we bought from has been in business in the same place for 20 plus years. They have dealt with us honerably and taken good care of us after the sale. I could be wrong but I don't think they'd hose me on this.

In the event this doesn't pan out, I will take action and I mean every possible angle. I'll go off my meds and fixate on them so bad, they'll never do it again.

By the way the dealer was R.V.s of Sacramento.
