Wouldn't it be nice to have a chest type fridge mounted higher up? One that you do not have to double over or kneel to get that beer in the back. Of all the things we enjoy, like hot water, furnace, lites, ect I would not miss that little hard to reach fridge. Turned on it's side mounted counter top level would be so much easier. I know it would not be assessable while top down, but still. We do use it because it works well and eliminates another cooler, but on my last PU I stored canned food in it and used a cooler, and I'm tempted to do that again........Shredder

Well, if you have the counter space, you could get a 'dorm sized' 110 fridge which would allow easy access.

I keep perishible foods in my fridge, and use the cooler outside my door for beverages (keeps everyone out of the fridge).  Who knows, maybe a manufacturer in the future will make some sort of lifting device for the fridge as they've got to know the issues with bending/kneeling to access stuff in it.

They make lifting galleys so I could see where it could be done. We do have a lot of counter space in ours so I wouldn't mind getting a dorm style fridge but it's not a priority right now. Plus with six of us storing it somewhere in transit could be a problem.

Many use the coleman powerchill:

$84 at discount stores.

you can plug it into 12v outlet in your tow vehicle while travelling.

We use one of these too (on longer campouts).... They're pretty efficient. We often leave ours on 12V for days.

If you want to pony up the bones, you can get a norcold chest style 12v freezer/fridge.  They run about $1k but I'm told by everyone who uses them that they are the best thing since sliced bread.  No more ice necessary.  Problem is you can buy alot of ice for $1k.

The previous owner used the fridge as a pantry and we have continued to do so and use a cooler for food and one for drinks.  Tell you the truth, I don't even know how the fridge works.

The camper was also sold with a dorm style fridge that we had kept in there until this weeked.  I took it out since we have never used it and have had good luck with the coolers.  We have also only camped weekends, so food spoilage is really not an issue right now.  We will be going to KY for a week in July and I am planning on bringing the extra fridge.  But it was really nice not to have it inside the camper this trip.. there was so much extra room and storage space!  I was wondering where to put the fridge... the previous owner said they kept it outside on the table... I am not sure I am comfortable with this with rain and all...  We do have the counter space, but I usually use it for our clothes and a place to dry dishes.  However since we are still new to this, we are always learning and we do something diffeerently each trip...

We have one of those (a couple years old now) and were wondering if it  was worth taking it on camping trips, glad you have had success with it.

When I ran over the road the first powered cooler I bought was a Koolatron and that thing worked great. It plugged into the cigarette lighter and kept things very cold. I never let it run over 24 hours without running the truck and never had a problem. http://www.koolatron.com/ The one I had you could reverse the plug going into the cooler to make it heat instead of cool.

We dry camp, so 110 alternatives would not work for us. I guess I was wishfully thinking maybe manufactures might see this and respond. Our little fridge works well, it's just not convenient. We usually start out with one or two coolers, then use the fridge as the ice runs out. For me at 6'7" and a bad back it's a PITA to have to bend over or lean in from outside to use it. A fridge mounted higher up, or even and outside opening door would be helpfull. Also I'd be willing to give up a little cabinet space for a bigger, easier to use cooler. Just look at how many of us who have a fridge still have to bring extra coolers..........shredder

What I did was to buy a shallow plastic tray that fits under the lower shelf. I use it like a drawer, so I only get down on my butt when I'm loading and unloading/cleaning. Otherwise I just pull out my plastic drawer to get the items in the back.  I also use a narrower/deeper plastic tray to use as a drawer on top of shelf next to the area where taller items can go.
