Hello All, we are not originally form TX, but I have been here 11 years and DH 9.  We strive to find very wooded and secluded (eing in an open area site within 10-20 ft of yoru neighbor isn't something we enjoy)
TX/OK lake side campsites within 1-3 hours of DFW area for weekend trips, and we'll go up to 10 hours for our week long Thanksgiving trip.

Any Suggestions?

We really like Lake Murray in OK, and Cedar Lake in OK, but we'd like to explore more of East and South East TX where I hear the lakes are just beautiful.

I would love to keep this Thread going so that it can become the 'Trip Advisor' of Texas Camping.

I'll post separatly on our wonderful trip to Palo Duro Canyon.

My wife and I are going to be camping just SE of Dallas over the Thanksgiving weekend (starting the Tues. before) at Purtis Creek State Park.  Go online to the Texas Parks and Wildlife home page and click "Find a park" and go from there.  I already have lots of park maps, etc. organized in a notebook for future reference.  On the TPW site you'll find all the State parks in Texas, and many of them are in the DFW area.  We book our trips by calling the # for reservations.
Don't know of any private campsites, so far we're satisfied with the State parks.

Hi,
I was raised around here and grew up camping in the FtWorth area.
Here's the best camping around....... that I know about that is.
Okay my favorite place in Glen Rose. There is a national or state park there and it's really pretty too. It's called Dinasour Valley it has ofcourse a campground.
As much as I truely love the great outdoors and state parks I personlly like cleaner newer facilities to actually camp at even if it's a bit closer together.
There is a campground in Glen Rose called Tres Rios (they have a websight too) I think. It's a fairly modern place, close to a creek/river and I think they have a pool too. It is pretty nice and they have a bluegrass festival in the Spring I think. The original small town square is also nice. OKay the next park is a state park in Mineral Wells. Pretty good but ofcourse thebathrooms are filthy true to form, but there is a small lake and decent hiking there. You can also rent a small fishing boat from a little store right on the lake. I think they don't allow big motor boats and the fishing is fair. I grew up in Benbrook and spent time on the lake and at the camground the city/state has there I am not impressed. It' okay facilities and if all you want to do is go out on a boat/fish it's good but thats is pretty much all there is to do there. I think it's called Dutch Branch park.
To be honest we go every Summer to CO and NM. But I have done my fair share of camping here. Now the most visited park in TX is Garner state park  and I have been told it's really beautiful, never been there myself and I do think it about a 5 hour drive from FW but I think it's worth mentioning anyhow.
By the way I loved Palo Dura Canyon too!

Hi a good RV park in Glen Rose (has websight) is Tres Rios and the Dinasour State park is close by nice to visit but nasty bathrooms for camping! Worth the entrance fee to hike and look around there are dinasour tracks there and it's very interesting. Also the creation museum is there and I've heard it's good as well.
