This is probably too general of a question but am open to any ideas.

Hubby and I have camped at Kentucky Natural Bridge this summer and loved it. The last couple weeks we were at Higgins State Park in Michigan and loved that too...great weather helps.

Any suggestions for a good state park or private campground in northern lower Michigan or the Upper Penninsula? We enjoy swimming, hiking, and scenic rides. We're looking at a couple weeks in August...late but hopefully might still get a spot.

Any hints would be appreciated! Thanks!

If you're looking for great hiking and daytrips, you could split 2 weeks up spend some time at  McLain SP and day  trip into the Keweenaw. Then scoot over to the
The Porkies  there are LOTS of trails there, and places to day trip to.

Between the 2 areas you won't run out of things to do

It's a great area, hope you enjoy it as much as we do.

If you are a fudge freak, stop in Calumet and go to the Calumet Mercantile. Try their Lake Superior Mud fudge..Best fudge ever!

We LOVE the U.P.!  In addition to Harold's suggestion, Muskallonge State Park is a favorite up on Lake Superior.

Fayette State Park includes a cool Ghost Town!

In northern lower, we like Leelaneau State Park too.

Howdy!
Great park, beautiful area. It sits at the base of "Copper Country", formerly the country's biggest copper producing area. Try some pasties (you eat them!). Copper Harbor is nice, and the A.E. Seaman Museum in Houghton is a must-see! Their web site is:

While I was (tent) camped at McLain, we had a front move through with sustained winds of 40mph, gusts up to 60mph! Caused eight-foot waves on Lake Superior! Sleeping in my tent was like laying at the bottom of a huge Jell-o mold watching it wobble! There is a trail right across the road from the entrance that leads to a lkae where I heard cranes calling, but they had disappeared by the time I packed up and hiked back there.
Have a great time, bring some warm clothes for the breezes off the Lake!

We love the KOA in Petoskey, Michigan.  The campground itself is beautiful!  The office/store/bathrooms/showers are a log cabin and the cleanest we've ever seen!  Beautiful pool, pool house and hot tub.  There's a creek that runs through the campground that has frogs, etc. that our kids caught with nets sold in the store.   Multiple barrels with flowers planted, paved sites with paved patio areas, wooded, even have cable outlets.  Family owned.

The surrounding area is just as beautiful.  Nice bike trails right along lake Michigan.  Only a 30 minute drive to Mackinaw City.
