I was given a 1997 Viking 1906 for free. It needs a little work but mostly it needs to be cleaned. For the past two years it was set up and never taken down. It has quite a bit of mold and mildew on the vinyl. It also has a musty smell on the inside. Any suggestions for removing the stains and the musty smell from the inside.

A solution of bleach and water may be used to remove the mold/meldew - apply either by blotting with soft cloth or a soft bristled brush - rinse well several times and allow to dry thoroughly.  Re-apply waterproofing and allow to dry.

You might open windows and put an oscellating fan inside to circulate the air and get the odor out, and, when you do finally close up - use a container of Damp Rid maybe in the entryway to absorb the moisture.  By placing in the entryway, it is easier to be noticed and emptied when opening the camper again - less likely to be knocked over and make a nasty mess.

Funny but my first though was if you got it for free, why not just replace the canvas.  That way you start fresh.  Just a thought

I thought about replacing the canvas but with no rips or tears it would be a shame.

Thanks for the advice.

WOOHOO for free!!!!  :-()

Replacing the canvas runs between $600-$900...... we paid $850 for a '79 Bethany.  Its not as hard to remove and install as you woud think.

I would say that if you can still see mold spots even after cleaning.... the canvas needs to be replaced..... but of course I'm no expert.  We cleaned the old canvas on the Bethany but could still see the spots and it made me to scared with small kids, KWIM.

Good luck :)

Congratulations on your "new" camper and welcome to PUT!

I would suggest that you contact Viking and give them the VIN from the camper so they can tell you what material was used on that camper, and what are the preferred cleaning materials and methods.  I have had very good experience when contact customer service, even with questions about our used camper.

Post some pictures when you can.
