"Noisy" roof question

This past weekend we stayed at Locust Lake SP.  There was heavy rain on Saturday night and Sunday.  This was our first trip in any kind of significant rain, and the noise on the hard roof was deafening.  It woke me up, and I could not get to sleep while it was raining so hard.  Now, I normally love the sound of the rain on the canvas, but the heavy rain on the hard roof sounds like someone is pouring tons of skittles or bottle caps on the roof. :(   Has anyone found a way to attenuate the noise?  I was thinking of some sections of bunk end blanket (Pop up Gizmo) type of material.

Although it is not a major problem, lack of sleep makes me cranky  :morning:

Thanks for any suggestions.

Some 31dB sponge ear plugs and back to sleep!

Otherwise, wake the wife up and find something to do.......for a while :#

One option would be to stay home.

Don't know how to soften the sound on the roof.  Maybe put a tarp over the top of the camper.  We've always put up with the rain, actually enjoyed it laying in bed, nice and dry.  Know what you mean by skittles, though.

This summer, I was backpack camping out in the woods on the Finger Lakes Trail.  Set up a hammock with tarp over it for the night.  Huge, loud thunderstorms rolled through all night.  I was happy I was dry, listening to the rain on the tarp.  Got a bit bright occasionally with the lightning, thunder was pretty obnoxious.  I did sleep.

This noise kept me up the first time we weathered thunderstorms with our popup on it's second use.  Since then, I have grown to enjoy the sound, and the memories of other rainy campsites.

After awhile and a few rain storms, you will not even notice the pitter patter of the rain. You just need to get used to it. Example, I live two blocks from a rairoad crossing, used to wake me every time a train came by in the middle of the night, now I just sleep right through it.

Not with the boys 10' away in the other bunk.

I suppose I will get used to it.  This was also an EXCEPTIONAL rain event.

Thanks.

I had a similar experience two weekends ago.  Then I remembered, "Hey, none of the noisy dogs were barking".  Life is good.

Ear plugs?  Good idea, but my wife says I can't hear anything anyway.  :)

I should have turned the fan on the A/C unit on since I was hooked up to electric.  Oh well, next time.

Later.

Well, I didn't think it would really be a viable option, but it would solve the noise on the roof problem.  The tarp suspended over the camper option would probably be better, but those that I've seen do this don't have a very aesthetically pleasing campsite.  You sure wouldn't get many visitors.

The only thing to do...learn to enjoy the sound of the rain on the roof and just be glad you're not dealing with it during the day.

We ran into quite a storm at Assateague Island National Seashore.  Sideways rain, heavy winds coming off the ocean.  The camper (travel trailer) was rocking back and forth (even with stabilizers down), battered by wind and rain.  The rocking helped us fall asleep.  Enjoyed the sounds and the experience.  Sky was clear and sunny by morning.  Perfect.

Jim I agree that it was an unusually heavy downpour.  I woke up at 0345 and stayed awake for a while and then went back to sleep.  It doesn't rain that hard that often, so hopefully you won't have the problem again soon.:)

I'll have to second the ear plugs.   DH is a heck of a snorer so I finally tried the earplugs---wasn't ready to try sleeping in another room without him  :>  I still hear the bell my mom rings if she needs me since we brought her to live with us after her stroke, I can still hear the phone,  the door bell, etc. but........it blocks enough of the other kind of noises that I don't hear much of the rain or the other campground noises (or Dh's tv) when it's time to sleep.  They have made a wonderful difference to someone (me) who was terribly bothered by any noises when I try to sleep!    I have to recommend them greatly!   Can't hurt to try!  :>
