MPLS Pop-up!

I just bought a 75 Palomino hard sided pop-up. It was $300 and most of it is in great shape- new canvas, cushions/upholstery, curtains, carpet and all of the moving parts work nicely. Pops right up!

It does how ever have some water damage. Looks like the old roof vent is cracked and of course leaked. Since its hard sided the wallpaper and curtains on one side need to be replaced.

Also the roof has a wee sag near the roof vent.

SO my questions for you all are....

1. Looks like the wallpaper was installed by taking out the windows. It is tucked nicely behind the trim. It seems CRAZY :screwy:  to me to remove the windows. Has anyone attemped to do this?

2. Assuming the wood is still good. Looked a-ok at 1st inspection.  Is there a way to fix the roof sag w/o replacing the roof? Can it be water proofed enough so that pooling water doesn't get in the camper? There is probably a 1/8 inch of standing water in about a square foot area. I think the roof is coated aluminum, but I'd have to check.

3. It has new canvas. The canvas has vinyl on the outside. Can I clean it with anything and not worry about waterproofing since it's coated on the outside?

Thanks!

Pics are worth a 1000 words.

Chances are, the roof may need a rebuild. However, at the price that you got the camper, I'd say camp in it until it falls apart, then buy a good camper.

There are lots of materials that you could use to fill that sag in the roof. It depends on what it is made of, how much you want it to look "Professionally" repaired, how much time and $ that you want to invest.

When you open the camper, does it smell moldy??

It smells stale. I wouldn't call it a moldy smell. More like my tent when I first set it up. I popped it up in the driveway with a tarp over it to air it out or I'd take a few pics of the roof.

The old owners hadn't used it in 6 years and the leak occured on a trip they took. I think it's good and dry(now), but structurally in need of a fixin before we can use it. I'm not against using it with a small roof size tarp on it if the sag can't be fixed while camping, but I am concerned about when we are towing it in the rain.

I'm not worried about the look of the repair. There could be a gorilla on the roof if it meant it didn't leak  ;) Can you give me a list of products to fill the sag(hopefully available at the Home Depot)?

Thanks!

We will need to know what the top is made of. It makes a big difference in what will "stick" and what won't.

It would also be immensely helpful to have a pic of the sag in the roof. It may make a big difference, depending on the location. I personally wouldn't make a recommendation without seeing a pic of it.

Alrighty. I'll do some investigating and photo taking.

Is the sag so bad that water won't drain off the roof when the camper is parked level?  If it IS that bad, then I'd do something about it.  If it isn't that bad, I'd leave it alone, reseal the roof seams everywhere with the self leveling roofing caulk you buy at RV places, and replace that vent cover.

At $300 (I paid two-fitty and mine had some nasty roof damage that I repaired) you've got plenty of room to play around with some repairs.

One option, lower the roof down onto something (a 5' step ladder with a thick folded towel on top) and see if the roof will bow back into shape.  If it will,  you could leave it that way for a week and see if it stays once you lift it back up, or close it.

Get creative, it's already damaged, so you're not going to hurt anything.
